FH and I are think about getting a puppy after the wedding. I have grown up with dogs all my life. I have always had golden retrievers. We live in an apartment so I was thinking of a smaller dog. Can anyone recommend a good breed. I have two nephews who are toddlers so we will need a child friendly dog and hopefully one that doesn't bark too much since we live in an apartment complex. Thanks

Yorkeis are not good with young children. Also, I woudn't recommend chiuhuas(sp?). These breeds are best with older children and adults. Greyhounds are supposed to be good family dogs. They are good for an apt and considered to be 'couch potatoes'. When you decide on the dog you want, please consider rescuing a breed from a rescue group. Or by adopting a dog/puppy from a shelter. You can find out more by doing a search on petfinders.com.

i would reccomend a Chinese Crested if you are wanting a dog that is good with kids. If thats the case, go to Petco and pick up a copy of the magazine titled 'Dogs for Kids' theres a crested on the cover. i think as long as you get a oty breed that is a puppy it will be fine with kids. My chi LOVES kids.

Toy Fox Terriers are wonderful. My tyson loves kids and plays, but yet is a total couch potato. You have to watch them around really young children though...they are fragile dogs and their legs break easy.

Are they okay alone during the day? FH and I both work and the dog would be alone 4 days a week from about 9 to about 4. Three days a week someone will be with the dog. FH actually could go home for an hour everyday when he is working also.

I was going to post Rotties bc they never bark too! I think we've heard Golem bark a handful of times since we brough him home. He loves everyone, and is alone during the day while we are at work also. (usually 2 or 3 until 7) They are a LOT of work though, esp if you are getting a puppy. They do require lots of training, and a firm owner as they try to be dominant if given the chance. Totally worth it though, IMO

winnie is home alone from about 8:45am till about 5:45/6:00pm. she's fine with that. all she does is sleep all day. your schedule sounds fine to me. we actually had a dogwalker come walk winnie once a day at noon until she was almost 2 years old, but i don't think we even needed the dogwalker that long. probably could've stopped 6 months earlier.

Shih-Tzus are very good alone. My FH and I also leave ours home for about 7 hours, and when we have off, she actually acts like we bother her alone time!
However, I don't know how well the act around children. My Emmie is afraid of children, but she was never around them growing up (she is 3 now). However, I think that if she was constantly around kids, she would be fine.
If you want a dog to spoil and who will spoil you, shih - tzu is the way to go! they are friendly, up-beat, very animated, have great personalities and they definatly let you know how they feel. Emmie has a bit of an attitude with others, but that is b/c we spoil her
Sorry so long, but once I start talking about Emmie, I can't stop!

Re: Recommended Breeds
I used to work in the industry, and have a lot of knowledge about different breeds. One i highly recommend is a Soft Coated WHeaton Terrier, they get up to about 40lbs, and have a really wonderful disposition.
I do urge you though to consider rescue groups, even get a small mixed breed, they can really be fabulous and will give you more love than you can imagine!
I just want to add that socialization is the key to any wonderful dog. Expose them to the things you want them to be used to later on in life in the early stages.

I second a shih tzu! I have one too, and she is EXCELLENT with kids, its like she knows that kids are different than adults, and when she sees one she get so happy and excited. She is not in the company of children that often either, so its a little strange how she reacts to them so well, but I am not complaining! She is also home all day alone and is totally fine, we leave her food and water, and she sleeps all day and is fine. They are very smart dogs, and are so loving. You will be happy with one!

I REALLY wanted a wheaten, but they are extremely hard to come by. I got a Cairn terrier, and I can't say enough about the breed. They are a cousin of the Wheaten & Westie's. He is a perfect pup, easy to train, GREAT with children. He is a great dog.

We have a mixed breed! She is a Jack Russell Terrier Mix. She loves kids, is great when left at home for up to 11 hours and was so easy to train, but she is a bit of a barker! She always has something to say.
I personally am a fan of mixed breeds! Our dog is actually a Bahamas rescue pup!

My mil has a boston terrier and it is SOOOOOOOO good with my 2 year old son!! She has been great with him since the day he was born! She puts up with sooo much from him and never barks or snaps or anything. She is also VERY protective of him.
We have a west highland white terrier aka a 'whitie' you can look them up online. Ours is just sooooooo cute and soooo smart!! She is only about 8-10 pounds and is full grown!
