I am pretty sure reception halls get some sort of a commission if you use one of their recommended vendors...which I then feel I should get a part of. Anyone know anything about this? If you used a recommended vendor, did your hall give you anything extra or reduce your prices at all?

I've never heard of such a thing. And while it's helpful to get recommendations from the hall, I would still check them all out carefully beforehand. If I remember correctly, there were some photogs recommended by my hall who were probably good, but not in line with my budget.

Actually, vendors that are recommended by your hall usually pay them to be recommended...That is what one of the limo companys recommended by my hall told me.

Vendors listed on a reception site vendor list not only pay to be on that list but many of them give a % of job to the catering manager/owner. Its all about kickbacks.
Depending upon the location, the price to be on that list can be extremely steep.

Yes, and sadly us brides usually have to pay more to use a 'house' vendor; in order to cover their kickbacks they charge us more. Highly unfair, but it's OK...none of my vendors are from the 'house'.
ETA: Had I chosen a vendor rec by my hall, they would eat free. And there's some sort of 'book x number of vendors, get upgraded menu' sort of deal...not interested though.

Definately give kick backs. I have a friend who is a 'house vendor' and they have to pay the catering hall a certain %.

Re: Recommended vendor kickbacks?
My photographer was recommended by my reception hall. My cousin also used them. Their pricing was pretty much the same for the both of us. I actually got more for my money, parent albulms and extra prints. I know they eat for half price but that saves me money not the vendor or the hall. So I am not so sure about any 'kickbacks' to the hall. I would assume that the vendor pays the hall to recommend them just like the vendors on hrere pay LI Weddings to recommend them.

You probably won't get anything from the vendors because they either pay to be on the list or they give the hall a commission for each bride. You might be able to get the per person price at the hall lowered though. When we met with catering halls- they gave us a price, and then I asked them if they would lower the price if we used some of their vendors--since I know they got a commission. Every hall stumbled a bit after I asked, but all but one lowered the price if we used their vendors.
