Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
I'm in Middle Island. Some area's of this town are eh but if you go near E. Bartlett, there are REALLY nice houses. I'd stay far far away from Shirley and Mastic. JMO!

If I had to pick from these areas I would pick Selden... not a fantastic area...but really not bad. I grew up 1 town over. It has a pretty decent school district. I don't want to offend anyone... but if school district is important to you I would stay away from the other areas JMO

I would have to agree with Lucky0510....from what I've seen and heard about the areas you mention., she is right.
FH is from Farmingville and I'll be moving in permantly to his house there once I close on my apt in Queens. Try looking there...while it's looked down on because of migrant workers, the entire town isn't bad and it's a good value for Sachem school district.
As with anywhere there are good and sketch areas in all towns on LI....what matters is the school district.

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
JMO but I would lean more towards Selden and Middle Island. When we were looking for a house we also looked at Ridge and loved it! It is the town over from Middle Island. Good Luck. And if you have a particular area let us know. I know alot of girls on here could tell you right away if it's a 'not-so-great' area.

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
Many of my students are from Middle Island, and judging from the educational skills they have when I get them, I'd bet that that school district is awful. AWFUL. I think thats Longwood out there?

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
Longwood not a good school district, my cousin went there. I live in Centereach (one town over from Selden). Most of Selden is good and the school district is not bad either. A big downside is the damn traffic on 25 all the time. And i hear they are possibly adding another big shopping center to the area which will make traffic even worse. BUUT if you like shopping everything is right there.

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
FH and his whole family lives in Centereach, and that is where our house will be. Selden isn;t too bad, but the key is to look at houses on the NORTH side of Route 25. The South side is very sketchy!!

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
We live in Selden. We are on a cul-de-sac, so sometimes I feel we are in our own little world. My daughter is 6 and is in the Middle Country School District. I cannot say enough great things about it. The only thing that stinks right now is the commute to work. FM me if you need any other info. Good Luck!!!!

Selden isnt bad. Centereach and Lake ronkonkoma are good too. I live in Patchogue. Stay away from east patchogue. North patchogue is where i live and its a great area. I live by caanan lake. Medford has its ups and downs. Dont go to bellport, shirley or mastic in my opinion, though each town has good areas and bad. Goodluck!!

Actually, Longwood has some of the best teachers. It's more of a lack of parenting that causes the lack of education. My FH is a teacher and has taught in both Longwood and Middle Country. He thinks the Longwood teachers are a lot more into their work and their school is run a lot 'tougher' then most schools. In other words they don't put up with a lot. And I have helped my FH grade his papers in Middle COuntry and let me tell you that it is NOT any better! lol!! But then again I hear that from alot of my friends that are HS teachers.

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
I grew up in the area (Comsewogue HS '98) and my family is still there. I was also a Guidance Counselor in Middle Country SD . JMO, but when buying a house, the school district is more important than the town. Yes, there are talented teachers in every school, but picking a school district is also about picking your child's future classmates. Make sure you know what school you're zoned for! Longwood IMO is an iffy district. Pat-Med, Middle Country (covers Selden and Centereach and parts of Lake Grove), Rocky Point, Sachem, and Comsewogue are better.

Re: Regarding houses in Suffolk County
I'm from Patchogue. It's a pretty good area. The school district isn't as good as it used to be but it's still pretty good. FH and I are thinking about looking for houses here. We live with FH's family and it's a nice area of Patchogue, south of the railroad tracks is where it gets a little iffy. Good luck! As far as Bellport, there are really good and bad areas as with any area. Part of Medford is Longwood school district and part is Pat-Med so make sure you know the cutoff if this is an issue for you.
