We may be registering soon, and we're trying to decide between Fortunoff's and Macy's. I was thinking that Macy's has frequent sales and may save people money. Any experience? Opinions?

Whatever you do try sticking to one place..I choose fortunoff's b/c they have a great variety (from $-$$$$)..but decided which is closer for all your guests and more convenient..also remember what if macy's puts an item on sale and u nedd to return it w/o receipt (they give u sale price!!!) and you are right macy's usually does run sales!!

I registered at Fortunoff. I think the salespeople are more helpful there. I've also had trouble when shopping other people's registries at Macy's because they seem to be frequently out of stock of a lot of items.
I know some people bought some of my china place settings that I registered for at Fortunoff's at Macy's when Macy's was having a sale. They told my mom or MIL who then had my DH delete it off my registry.
eta: If you want to save people money, register at BB&B. People can always use one of the 20% off coupons. And BB&B is all over the place. I registered at BB&B and Fortunoff

We registered at Macy's for all of our fine china, stemware, and silverware. We had a really pleasant experience registering at Macy's. They were nice, helpful, and there are a bunch of neat little things that they throw in when you register.
We have a lot of poeple coming from out of state, so we also registered at Kohl's for everything else since they have those all over the country.

It definitely depends on where your guests are...we registered at both Macy's and Fortunoff's. We have a lot of guests in MA and there are no Fortunoffs in MA.
Also, something that is kind of a pain about Fortunoff's that my Mom discovered, they did not have my china pattern right in the store. When she bought it she had to go drive to the warehouse to pick it up...she felt like a lot of people will think this is a pain in the *** so we are going to put half of our china on one registry and half on the other.

If you can't decide - do both! I registered at both places. At Macys, I registered for kitchen appliances, bedding, and luggage. At Fortunoff, I registered for china, crystal and bedding.
I found that it is better to register for kitchen appliances at Macys. Macys has a very good selection and they always have a sale on appliances. Most of my guest did buy from Macys because it has more locations, and all over the US.
For china, I found it better at Fortnoff's. The service for china is better there. Also, I found there are better sales and deals on china there as well.
Have fun registering!

Thanks for the great advice, everyone! It's true...we're ALWAYS getting those BB&B 20% off coupons.
Time to talk it over with FH!

I register at Macy's because it was more convenient for everyone. Plus they have a bridal club where they give a % back of what everyone purchases for you in Macy's money.
For crystal, I registered at William Sonoma.

I actually looked at both places and their prices. I was very surprised but Fortunoff was cheaper on most items then Macys. I picked out a Lenox place setting and Fortunoff was 50% less that is a big difference.

I registered at Macy's since they are affliated with tons of other federated stores all over the US and they run great sales. I had a wonderful experience with them when I registered and would highly recommend it!

thank heavens, a good review of Macy's! i also registered there because a lot of my family lives down in TX and Macy's are all over the place there. i have been really pleased with them, updating my registery online is easy and the service at the Macy's I went to was fine. My MOH registered at BBB when she got married in DEC '03 and loved them! She changed her mind about her entire china pattern and exchange ALL of it no problem!

I've also heard a lot of bad things about Macys Registry lately, but I guess it also depends on where most of your guests are. Macys is more accessible than Fortunoff, and some people may not be into internet purchases.

I did Macys and some other stores - but not fortunoff's - I have so many out of state guests, that fortunoff's just wasn't practical!

Re: Register at Macy's? Fortunoff's?
I hated registering at Macy's, later registered at Fortunoff's and Crate & Barrel. We did not register for formal china, though, so that might be a deciding factor for you. I found the salesperson at Macy's annoying- she didn't seem to want to hear that we weren't registering for china or crystal and pushed the completion programs, which did not apply to us. She pushed us to register for a rotisserre- how wonderful it was to have one, blah, blah, blah and then when we tried to register for one, they only had one and it was being discontinued. Did she know the inventory at all???
Then, when we went to register for the stuff we wanted, pots, everyday dishes, and appliances, we found that in many categories they only had ONE item in stock (I found only one teakettle in the whole department- by contrast Fortunoff had about 25!) They carry a lot of their own brand and then maybe one other brand for most of the pots and kitchen inventory. Also, many of the things we tried to register for were being discontinued. So I just dumped the whole thing. For us, it was an exercise in frustration.
Edited to say: we had a lot of OOT people too, many of them bought online and had the gifts shipped, so it really wasn't that big of a deal.

I agree- Fortunoffs is great
I also registered @ MAcys for the convienence and the only thing I didn't like was when I went to scan- if something was on sale or clearance it wouldn't allow me to scan it- very frustrsting.

Re: Register at Macy's? Fortunoff's?
I registered with 4 different places. Fortunoff was one of them. We started at Macy's, but I found it frustrating when I shopped there for other registries. I think if your guests will do a lot of online shopping, Macy's isn't bad, but in the actual stores, I found the selection to be poor.
