Register or Not Register

Register or Not Register

Anyone on here not registering for the wedding? FH and I are moving into our new apartment in about a week, and plan on getting most of the things we need for it within the next month...One of my relatives asked today if we're getting a registry for things for the house...Not sure how I feel about getting a registry, since 1) we'll already have most of the things for the house by April, and 2) I don't want people to think they have to buy us something, 3) I never thought of doing one.

anyone else not doing a registry?

I suggested to her that I should do a pre-wedding registry for this month

EDIT: If I were to do a registry, by when would I set it up and by when do people normally start using it to purchase things? not sure how these things normally work...since nobody in my family has ever done one.

i am going to register for my shower. i think it's appropriate to register a month or two before the event (whether it be shower, engagement party, wedding) bc you want to make sure the stuff you want is in stock.

Do a Honeymoon Registry!

We did, and stated that we had most of our household necessities---but still ended up registering for things like new knives, a drill, towels, etc.

You might make a small household registry (like with 30-40 items) for the things you don't need when you immediately move but would like (like new cookie sheets, serving pieces, etc)

Very cool - I've never heard of a HM registry before.

Part of the problem I'm having an issue w/ doing a registry is because I don't want people to think that they have to get us something. I realize most people get gifts, but in my family, most of the time it's a monetary gift...But I haven't thought before that some people would prefer to just get a gift. I'm going to take a look around and see what kind of registries there are including the HM one.

I guess we can make one JUST IN CASE people want to buy from it instead of a gift to give them chocies.

Why not register for things you don't need right away? Like a food processor, or a stand mixer. Maybe you can live without a toaster or toaster oven for a while? Or maybe use crappy plates you already have or someone's hand me downs, and register for new ones?
FH and I have lived together and on our own for years, but there are still things we want and will need in the future. Basically I restrain myself in house ware departments a lot, so I won't buy our upgrades just yet!
Why buy the nice stuff now? Save that money for the wedding! Maybe your relatives will throw you a shower/moving party and you'll get the gifts earlier.

Thanks girls!

Jesebelle - when are you opening up your registry? Just trying to figure out how the timing works for these things.

But are you having any type of shower? We theorized that most of our registry items were shower worthy, and not wedding present worthy (except the HM). Since his family is from the South, they feel the need to do wedding gifts and not money....so we did the HM registry for them.

I have lived on my own and now with FH. We still wanted new things for when we are married that we have had for a while now. As well, her close friends and family wanted to get us gifts. They kept asking where we were registered and that is what had us do it now.

Nope, no shower or any other kind of party - just the wedding itself. That's why I almost feel like having no registry and if people want to leave money then they can do that, otherwise I'm not expecting them to leave anything else. I just didn't want anyone to feel obligated to get us a gift...

I might just set up one, so for those people that want it, we'll have items in there that we'd like to have but we don't need for a while. That's a good idea. Thanks girls!

I'm not doing a shower either but since I am going to the 2011 one I set up a small registery with about 20-25 items. I did overhear one of my co-workers talking about how she buys gifts for weddings and doesn't like to give $$ so I guess we might get a few gifts at the wedding so I would rather have something that we would like to update instead of something random.

Totally makes sense - I think I'm going to do this. Are you already set up with your registry, or do I do it a few weeks before the wedding?

I just set it up about 2 weeks ago. I just put some dishes, silverware and a kerug on it. This way if anyone asks I can tell them I have a small one

Re: Register or Not Register

I would definitely suggest to register! You'll probably be having a shower right? If you aren't, then there may not be a huge need for a registry, but if you are having a shower you will need to be registered. I understand you don't want people to feel like they have to buy you something, but they will want to and they'll appreciate the help.

Also, my FH and I have been living together for a year now and there is sooooo much we still need. anything we do buy on our own we just remove it from the registry (we made one a while back). But there are some gifts we received for our engagement that are still hanging out in the closest. It takes a lonnnng time to adjust and get everything in the right places.

Edited::::: just read your post about the shower thing. You may just want to register for a few things. Just in case people want to get them.

Nope not that I know of We're doing things very low key, and nobody in my immidiate family has really done a bridal shower before (to be honest with you, I've never been to one or really seen one before) so I doubt I'll be doing one.
