for those of you that dont own a home yet but already live with FH in an apartment....i feel like FH and I already have a lot of stuff..we have both lived on our own and when we moved in together we already have 2 sets of some things lol..(of course i want new stuff) but what i really wanted to know is...are you registering for things you guys will use now or will you keep it in storage til you get a house? like for example bedding...do i get bedding to use in our apartment or register for bedding i think i would use in my house that i dont have yet and probably wont have for another year and a half.

FH & I already live together but I supplied everything. We registered for 'our' things. Things that we both like not just things I already had. We are building a life together...so we looked at it as our ultimate wish list!

Re: registering when you already live w FH
I've lived with FH for over a year. We have alot of stuff but it is 'apartment quality' stuff. We are far off from thinking about a house but I am still registering for alot of new stuff like bedding, towels, china, everyday dishes, etc. I figure now is the time to get this stuff. Some of it we will use and some we will just store.
We are also making up a friendly/cute little card to put in my shower invite letting people know that if they can't decide what to get us they could always help us by contributing to our 'Honeymoon Piggy Bank' since this is a big expense for us. I know my wedding party is all going to contribute money to this instead of buying us something like china because we need that more right now.

hmm i think i meant more like should we register for stuff to use in the apartment or for stuff to use in a house when we get one. Like ok....towels...should i get ones that will match my bathroom now..or towels to match what i want my bathroom to look like when i get a house hey or both lol

we registered for white towels and other bathroom stuff. We figure it goes with our apartment bathroom and even when we move into a house im sure we could always find a use for white towels.

Are there things like fine china or crystal that you don't have now? What about serving platters? I would register for expensive bedding, sheets, blankets that will match with what you have now and what you'll have in your new home. Register for seasonal things that will be available at the time of your shower and wedding.

Re: registering when you already live w FH
I'm not in this boat of living with FH already, but from what I've heard from others, this is an opportunity to upgrade what you may already have and/or register for things you'd like to have in the future.
good luck!

I would go for house quality but add some things that match your apt and appliance upgrades, etc so you can start enjoying part of what 'pours' sooner.

FH and i have lived together for over a year and we faced the same issue. i tried to register for a mix of things...some stuff we'll use now and some stuff we'll save for when we get a house, or at least a 'nicer' apt. when it came to towels, bedding, etc, i tried to register for 'classics'...things that would look good anywhere....like white towels or neutral colored bedding.

Re: registering when you already live w FH
We did both- some of the stuff we registered for will wait until we have a bigger place, but some we actually replaced what we had already. We are actually already using a lot of the things we'd gotten as engagement gifts.

Re: registering when you already live w FH
We got a lot of stuff from our registry for our engagment party and I am sure we will get tons of stuff for the shower. We already have an apartment together and decided that we are not going to use anything we get until we move into our new house after the wedding. Right now I have TONS of stuff sitting at my grandfathers house waiting for the wedding to be over.

Re: registering when you already live w FH
we've been living together for 3 years - in the beginning we had a lot of hand me downs and then eventually we got A LOT of our own things to match with our decor so we really dont 'need' anything....eventually we will be gettting a house and we decided that everything we get from the shower we will keep boxed and in storage because when we have a house it will be awesome to have everything brand new and it will be easier to move since everything will already be boxed - everything we register for will be based on things we'll need for our house to start off with like plain white bath towels & plain white sheets for the guest bathroom/bedroom - and then some newer things for our kitchen - appliances that we dont have room for now, new pots and pans, new silverware, a dyson, a new iron, things like that - we arent registering for fine china though b/c i rather people buy me things ill use on a regular basis - im not into fine china, i wont be displaying it and i dont think its a necessity for entertaining - our families arent like that, sometimes my mom doesnt even use the china on holidays because she doesnt want it to break plus ill eventually get some things passed down from my mom that were from my grandparents....the thing for me that will be crappy is that we are going to receive gifts that we cant use yet - and we arent sure how soon we'll get a house so these things may be in storage for a few months to a year....so it will be hard to say goodbye and put them into storage hahahaha - but we already have everything we need to live so i guess its not so bad!

Re: registering when you already live w FH
FH and I 'dual' live. Meaning we spend equal amounts of time at his place and mine. we have everything also between the both of us. Somethings we picked together knowing that eventually we would get married.
That being said, we're running into the same conundrum about registering. So we are going to register, but we're going to register for all our 'wish' list items, things we didn't get because we couldn't afford to or because we just simlpy never did. Some items include, good knife set, good pots and pans, bedding, new towels, nice coffee machine, maybe an expresso machine. We really don't need everyday plates and cups because we ahve too mayn between the both of us. We also plan on registering for luggage. Right now neither him or I have any, we borrow our parents.
Another suggestion someone gave when I had posted here a long while back was to register for the honeymoon.
Good luck!

Re: registering when you already live w FH
I would totally register for future things! Why not? I registered for all my china and crystal and stuff and I have absolutly no place to put it....but i will have it when i do someday. What type of time frame till you get a house? If it's with in a year or so then why not get extra bedding?

Re: registering when you already live w FH
we lived alone, then i moved in with him, so we have a lot of stuff, but we still registered for new stuff, so we would have 'our' stuff, not mine or his. right now everything is in MIL's basement, but we plan on using our new things when we buy a house, hopefully by the end of the year. we will use a few things now, but it's really nice to finally have 'our' stuff now.

Re: registering when you already live w FH
we registered for all new stuff because when we moved into our place everyone kept telling us not to buy the 'good stuff' because we can just register for it later.
so we did and we better get it!!!

Ahhh a Dyson, you just made me add that to my list Forgot about that item.
FH can't wait for the knives also...he does all the cooking and loves it. He even has a standing mixer. I had only ever used hand mixer before i met him
