Wendy, what about just registering for a few things that you could use right now? That way your registry will sell out quickly and the rest of your guests will likely just give you cash.

Well, do what you want, but I agree that you should not register for items just so you can return them. While you say it is not very thoughtful to pick an item off a registry, people still need to spend time in the store shopping, when they could be doing other things. If you would prefer cash, spread the word. Personally, I would be annoyed if I dragged myself out to buy something on a registry, and found out it was returned for cash.
Another option is to register for non-typical things if you don't have space now. Books, music, sports equipment, most shops have registries of some kind.
