registry etiquette question

registry etiquette question

Ok...So I registered this past weekend at Fortunoff and Crate and Barrell and was planning on sending the cards out along with my e-party invites. I wanted to do this because I would rather receive gifts off my registry for the e-party and shower and get cash gifts for the actual wedding(not to sound greedy). I just read on the knot that sending out your own registry cards is impolite. The article said it was fine to send them with your shower invites because you don't actually send those yourself, but as for sending the registry cards out with the wedding invites or on your own it is not the right way to go. Honestly, I did not even want to register for several reasons a) like I said we are paying for the entire wedding on our own and would much rather receive cash as gifts at the actual wedding b) we already live together and have most of what we need c) We just think its a little weird to ask people to buy you things and what exactly to buy. The only thing I really want from the registry is the fine china and flatware. I really didn't register for much else (some casual china, a new pot set and some bowls etc). But, my friends and coworkers talked me into registering and said I would really regret it if I didn't. They are the ones that said people need ideas of what to buy for the e-party and shower. But now I am reading its wrong to send these out with e-party invites. I am so confused! I don't know what to do. Did you guys send your registry cards out w/ e-party invites?

Re: registry etiquette question

IMO I would create a website, like on here or theknot, and post the registries their and send the address to the website with your invites, and say something like 'for more details see www.yourwebsite.com'

That way you can give your guests other information as well, not just your registries, with out braking any rules of etiquette.

Personally, I wouldn't send out the registry information with the e-party invite. Start a wedding website on theknot.com. I know that's the first place that I go when I want to find someone's registry. You may also want to have your bp and family spread the word of where you are registered.

I wouldn't send out the registry information for your engagement party. I would only send that information out with the bridal shower invite. Once people see your engagement invite, they will ask you if your registered.

Are you and your FH throwing the E-party yourselves? or are your parents/his parents throwing it?

IMO:

If you are throwing it yourselves - don't send registry info

If someone else is throwing it for you - do send registry info

I wouldn't include the cards, according to the 'etiquette' rules it is deemed tacky. I would as some already suggested use WOM and if you have one put it on your wedding website. But if you want cash more so than actual gifts wouldn't it be better to just not register?

Re: registry etiquette question

I agree to not send it out with the e-party invite, if you have friends or family like me who almost never look at wedding websites, you can ask you're MOH or whoever is planning you shower to include it in that invite. Remember most stores offer you some sort of discount or % off whatever is left on your list after the event, so even if ppl don't get you things of your registry it will benefit you in the end.
