I was wondering when you all registered? I am dealing with drama from both sides of the family on what we should do. My mom thinks it's too early to register, and that I should do it later on for the shower (I agree). BUTTTT, FMIL thinks we need to do it now, bc people from their side are asking about it, and she doesn't want them to feel obligated to give money. (Which I kind of understand)
We don't really want to register yet, because we don't know what our taste will be, or if we'll still be in the same apartment to pick out decor. And of course we want the money to help pay for the wedding.
So what do you guys think, Is it rude not to register.. When did you girls do it?
TIA
ETA: Sorry, I should have added, that this is for our engagement party for March 6th. We would like to use that money to help us pay for the wedding. We aren't relying on it, but it would def. help with deposits and stuff for vendors.

Re: Registry Question
I will say If you guys are NOT sure, then u should NOT do it... Keep in mind it is ur wedding....
I think u should NOT depend on wedding's money to pay for the wedding... bc u never know...

Re: Registry Question
my FMIL said the same thing to us ... that her friends and family has been asking about our registry and they want to send us gifts and blah blah blah ... none of them have sent us a gift yet!
i registered (because she asked me) almost as soon as we got engaged ...
i think you should do something to please everyone ... register for certain things (like a vacuum cleaner, a vase, pots and pans) ... i would not register yet for bedding and dishes.
that way, everyone's happy
oh also - register online for now so you don't have to waste time going to stores

Re: Registry Question
If I were in your shoes, I'd probably register for some things, but not all, esp since you're having a party. The only reason I wouldn't go ahead and do all of it, is that stuff will be come discontinued before your wedding/shower. So that can be a pain. Good luck!!

Re: Registry Question
Register for a few things that you could use now. I'm not registering until about a year out because things get discontinued all the time. I dont want to have to change my reg. over and over again.
eta- Jill and I must have been writing at the exact same time! Great minds.....

Re: Registry Question
I was thinking of that, kind of just registering for stuff that we could use now in our apartment, nothing big. This way, like you said everyone is happy!
Thanks!

Re: Registry Question
Don't register til after the engagement party. I think that its customary for guests to give money as gifts for that.

Re: Registry Question
I'm pretty sure most people don't register for engagement parties.
I know I didn't register for mine - and it gave us a almost $5,000 down payment on our reception hall.
I think it's more expected to register for a shower.

Re: Registry Question
I'M IN THE SAME BOAT!!!!!!! our engagement party is March 13-- wedding is not until 10/7/11-- i dont want to register right now-- FH and I dont even live together yet!!! What am I supposed to do with all the stuff we get???
fmil keeps asking because her family keeps asking and i keep making lame excuses-- we dont have time etc etc...
my mom agrees its just too soon to register!!! so im just not registering and we'll see what happens
oddly enough-- fmil did mention that it would be nice if we registered for our 'honey moon' i was surprised shed be open to that so we may end up doing that

Re: Registry Question
Since you guys want money and there really is no polite way of asking for it just register for a few items that you need or want. Also i beleive bed bath and beyond still gives you cash for returning any item on your registry....you might want to double check that.

Re: Registry Question
I registered. FMIL family wanted me to register b/c her friends wanted to get us gifts. We registered and got a tonnnnn of gifts before our e-party but it was only from a few people. Register for some things so they have the option. I didnt put where we were registered in the e-party invite

I agree, this way you can still get money. But on the other hand, if you need the money and that's what you want, don't register. People are going to spend money anyway, what's the difference who the check is being written out to? They might be more generous to write a check to you then to BBB.

I think that engagement parties are fairly new here too I never heard of them until about 10 years ago. I'm probably wrong though. We're not having one, all the $ is going to the wedding.

Re: Registry Question
I would just register for a few things just to make her happy. I wouldnt pick anything major that can be discontinued, but you can do like picture frames, or vases, or kitchen stuff. It would help to avoid an argument. Most people are still going to give money.
