Rehearsal at church late PM- what to do for dinner??

Rehearsal at church late PM- what to do for dinner??

so, fh and I went to speak with our priest yesterday after mass. he ok'd everything- rose petals, aisle runner, pew bows...it's so easy ( Fr. Bob) it helps that he's known us for many years, but he is just the most wonderful person.

beside being the sole priest in our parish, he is also an immigration lawyer that helps hundreds of people become citizens every year. because of this other work, his mass schedules are a little different.

it turns out our rehearsal will not be able to begin until 8:30 pm b/c he has meetings and then has to say Thursday night mass before it. that should bring to about 9pm and bring the dinner up to 9:30, which i think is late for dinner on a Thursday night.

In my situation, what would you do for the 'dinner'. I am kicking a few ideas around, but am curios to know what you all think. thanks!

I'm in the same situation, just for a Friday...we're having the RD back at my house, and serving cocktails and appetizers...

I attended a rehearsal dinner once where the dinner was before the rehearsal. The dinner started at about 5:00 and then the rehearsel was at 8:00... it was ok, but I would have rathered have the dinner after. It was just that you couln't fully relax at dinner (and drink like you wanted to )because you knew you had to go do something afterwards...

ETA: I would rather do cocktails and appetizers after, rather than dinner before. JMHO

i agree with trying to do it before hand.

Yea, it is not ideal, but it makes more sense

I just don't think people would be able to make it on time for dinner. most people in my bp don't get home from work until 6 pm the earliest, and they are all taking off the Monday after so I don't want to inconvenience them too much. I think before may be too much pressure just to get a full dinner in.

ugh...but I don't want to 'jip' anyone either!!

I don't know about anyone else, but after I eat, I lose motivation for ANYTHING and don't pay attention...

I am in the exact same situation. Our rehearsal is late Thursday night, because of the church. We are having the dinner after because my FH does not want everyone drinking before church. (His family is a drinking family, but I'm the one that's Irish, go figure) Also, all of our attendants are from OOT, so if we did it earlier, everyone would still be traveling.

I'd say try beforehand, but weigh all your options, like we did. There are pros and cons for everything. Is your wedding on Saturday too? If so, what does it matter if you're up late on Thursday? Good luck!

I just realized that your wedding is on Sunday. Talk to your attendants. We asked all of them what they thought. I don't think you can have dinner first, for the reason you stated about them getting out of work. Hope this helps.

if I were in your bp, I'd prefer apps and such following the rehearsal.

I'd rather be out a little later during the week then have to rush from work to be somewhere. And since it's a Thursday, I wouldn't feel as bad about possibly being a little tired for work - cause it's Friday.

why not poll your bp and see what they prefer.

Lots of people stay out late on Thursday nights, because the next day is Friday and the week is over. I think dinner at 9:30 is fine. Now if it were a Monday or Tuesday night, that would be another story.

i would totally be into a late rehearsal dinner---i mean, i would normally go out on a thursday night till 11 anyways....

but that said, i would do what Christine is doing and having a true Cocktail party with great foods. Maybe add in a carving of some sort if someone wants a little nosh.

Most likely, people will have ate something before the church anyways.

I was thinking for you...I thought for a sec..what if you had a gathering at a local cafe afterwards with desserts coffee etc...but then i was thinking if people are coming from work then they may be be hungry... I think the best thing in your case, given it is a thursday is to hook up with a eatery that is as close to the church as possibe....are there any walking distance???? That way you can get there quick, and have dinner.....Is the church in Park Slope???

Jess, I would still do the dinner afterwards. it may be a little late, but its better then having dinner rushed because you want to make it on time to the church.

Definitely have a little something before the church rehearsal...I would say around 5:30-6pm...

ETA: Can you find a restaurant near the church? So that even those that make it at 6 dont have to rush for the 8:30 reception? I think 2 hours is more than enough for a dinner...make its small and simple.

Re: Rehearsal at church late PM- what to do for dinner??

these are my two main predicaments

dinner before = drunk and lazy bridal party before the reheasal- not good!

dinner after= parents and their kids and people that work trying to get home early- AND everyone being cranky and unwilling to do ANYTHING b/c it's late and they are starving....

I think I may go Christines route with something simple at home, and then go forward with my plan to have a bm brunch before we get our nails done the day before the wedding, and have fh take his boys out too.

if it's not one thing, it's another!
