Relatives in Italy - do I send an invitation even though they said they won't be able to come over for the wedding?

I'm trying to figure out how many invitations to order. I have a lot of family in Italy - whom I can't even speak to - most of them I've only seen a few times in my life and unfortuntely none of my aunts or cousins will be coming to the wedding. Should I be sending an invitation even though they've already told my dad they won't be coming?

Thank you!

My entire family is in Italy. Maybe, four people will be coming for the wedding. We will send immediate family invitations.. same thing for FH. His family is in Greece.

I think you should send them invites, at least to the close family.

I would send them, even if you know they aren't coming. We are sending to family we know won't come, it's another way of letting them know about the 'new' addition to the family

I think you still should - they may want to keep the invitation as a momento -

ETA: Both FH and I have family in Greece - and we know they arent coming - we are still sending invites to them out of respect -

According to Emily Post(how many of my psts start like this), you shouldn't send invites to people who you know wont ocme b/c it looks like you're asking for a gift. You're supposed to send a wedding announcement after the wedding, b/c that doesn't come with a gift obligation. That having been said, I'd probably still send invites to immediate family, to let them know I wanted them included, but ti depends on your relationship to the person.

I sent invites (JUST the invites, no RSVPs, reception cards) to our families in Uruguay and Greece, even to the relatives I knew weren't coming. I'm sure they would've gotten offended if I didn't.

My entire family is out of state. My dad's side are all in Florida. My mother's in Peru. I'll be lucky if 4 of my mom's family can make it. But we are still sending them invitations. Even though I know they can't make it, they would still want the invitation as a momento. Besides, it lets them they are still important to us,even though they can't come, we still wish they could be there.
I have heard from a few brides that they were suprised how many people who they thought were definite NO'S ended up making the trip!
I know b.c I have asked this question before....

Being Italian, I know they are expecting one even though most are not planning on coming.
I would out of respect.

The older relatives who I know aren't coming from overseas we just sent the invitation to without the respone or reception cards. We included a note in Italian saying we wanted them to have this as a memento of the wedding.

I sent them...I think my aunt and uncle are going to make it. I have most of my family there...to them its an honor to receive an invite even though they won't be able to make it.

yes..it's proper etiquette to send an invitation to family even if you definitely know they are not coming...OR you could order announcements for after the wedding.

We will be sending the invite without enclosures so Its almost like an announcement. And I'll be adding a sheet with the translation in Italian -- I figured they would get offended if they didn't receive anything

Emily Post says no? Really?

No one is coming to my wedding but Im sending out A HUNDRED or more invites. I have to. Its an insult to not send out an invite to family members even if you KNOW they're not coming.

I get wedding invites for Texas weddings all the time. We don't RSVP (not necessary down there) but we do say congrats via email. If I were not to get an invitation for a wedding I know about or later found out about then I would assume they didnt want me to come.

Now as a bride I find this obligation annoying. It costs a lot to get those invites. I know they're not coming why should I waste my money. But the same is true for me. If I dont send them out, my father must answer to my family 'why'. *shrug*

Thank you for your responses. What a great idea to translate the invitation in Italian so they can read it. And I can totally see that our of respect I should send it to my aunts even though I have only seen them twice in my life.

Thank you!
