Relatives staying at your/FH's house?

Relatives staying at your/FH's house?

Does anyone expect that you will be hosting relatives in your homes during the week of your wedding? What about FH? Anyone uncomfortable about this?

I think I will be having my grandparents at my house (not too bad, but still tight) but I think FH will be having a house full of overseas guests and he thinks he will be asked to give up his bedroom. I told FH that I think he should put his foot down and tell his mom that he is sleeping in his bed because it his wedding, but he doesn't think he will win.

Thoughts on relatives using your house like a hotel for your wedding?

Yes there are going to be A LOT of people in my house b/4 my wedding. I am not looking forward to it at all. But I will NOT give up my bed.

Actually our apt. is too small for guests...and my parents aren't accepting 'reservations'. We feel bad doing this, but it is going to be just too crazy. We made sure that everyone has the hotel info. Rather than make exceptions for certain family members, we just made it the same for everyone.

I will have alot of relatives from overseas. But most understand the craziness involved on the wedding day and are looking into hotels to stay at. my relatives from here may have to help them get around, but there would be way too many people if they stayed in my house!!

My FI's mother and sisters are coming from Ireland. His mom and maybe a few nieces will be staying in our apt. I will be staying at my Dad's house.

I know he will give up his bed for his mother and he will sleep on the couch or on a aerobed. He wouldn't think of asking his mother to sleep on the couch, and it is very european to have people stay with you when they visit. I think only american think people should stay at hotels...

His sisters and their families will be staying at his friends apts.

FH is from Poland and I guess it is true that Europeans think differently about coming to visit. But when we went to visit some of his family, we stayed in hotels because there was limited space. I guess I am bugged about the fact that there will be a lot of commotion and I would like my FH to be able to get a decent night's sleep in his own bed (comfy pillow top mattress) rather than be stuck on a futon or something. Call me crazy, but I am protective of him and I want him to sleep in his own bed, he bought it for himself!

i would put the foot down about giving up the bed. the wedding is for the Bride and Groom, thats why people have hotel rooms..

YES!! If my family gets a visa from Ecuador to come to my wedding, my house will be FILLED with people. I love them to death but I refuse to give up my bed and my room to anyone. I need to get my beauty rest.

He can either put the foot down or stay in the hotel the night before...

My cousin's wedding - her mother planned to have 10 people stay over their house PLUS their children (all under 5!!! )

My cousin put her foot down! She wanted a peaceful morning and that's what she got!

Yes, but we are staying in our apartment up to Thursday with one of his groomsmen and girlfriend staying with us (or his dad, depends on if his dad wants to stay with us or his neice). However, since our wedding is on LI and we live elsewhere, we are going on Thursday to my dad's house where I will stay that night and get ready the next day, while FH and groomsmen and his father will be staying at a hotel. My friend said not to have anyone stay at all, but I agree, it is the European thing to do and FH's family/friends are from 'across the pond'. He knows that hotels are scarce round where we are so at least we can accomodate some people. But they will have to understand that 1) i will be going crazy with last minute things 2) i might be high strung that week 3) probably won't be going out alot that week with friends that come in for the week. i am not running myself ragged =)

when my brother got married in MD he was adamant that EVERYONE stayed in a hotel. i didn't blame him one bit, but i know a few of the 'older' generation were slightly offended by that.

Generally, the default in my family is to have relatives stay at the house. But one of the first things I said when we got engaged was that no one (except my parents, my sister, and I) would stay at our house. There would have been no way to control the numbers - we have an enormous extended family. It was a fight, but I was ultimately able to win (although my dad is still sulking a bit). It will also be the last time that the 4 of us will really be together as a family, and I wanted to be able to keep it that way.

I had relatives from overseas stay with us at my parents house but I made sure that no one touched my bedroom. My husband's parents live in PA and so his relatives stayed at his uncle's house.

DH had this issue...and got no sleep the night before b/c he was on the couch and his brother is the loudest snorer in the world...

Can they stay in a hotel the night before your wedding and then stay at the house the rest of the time? Maybe they'd be willing to do that. I have relatives from Ireland coming and they are staying in the hotel the night before and of the wedding, and will probably stay with my parents the rest of the time.

FI already stated that he will NOT permit any relatives to stay at his house for the wedding. They will drive him nuts...I have yet to hear him actually TELL his relatives this but he wants to send them all to a nearby hotel...yeah, let's see this happen!

Re: Relatives staying at your/FH's house?

I like the idea of relatives staying in a hotel if only for the night before the wedding. I feel that families need private time before the wedding and with a photographer around, what are you going to do with people. Perhaps if we offer to split the cost if money is an issue. I just wish people would respect that this is a stressful time and the bride and groom may need privacy to think and get ready for their wedding.

Re: Relatives staying at your/FH's house?

I just wanted to add that while my relatives from overseas will be staying in the hotel before the wedding, they are staying at my house afterwards. Once I leave for my honeymoon. I did the same thing when I went to Italy last summer for my cousin's wedding. This way beforehand we could do our own thing during the day and meet up for dinner while they finished wedding things and then I stayed with all my aunts and uncles the rest of the time. You need your space and time to do your own thing on your wedding day. That is the way I look at it.
