released? repost from '10

so fh, fmil and i were just sitting around their living room, and fmil turns to fh and says, 'you know, if you're not getting married in the church you have to call and have them release you'..HUH??

fh is catholic, and im non-denominational christian, so were getting married at our rh to not put an emphasis on either religion (neither of us are really religious)

so, what does it mean to be released?

it's actually a rumor. I'm catholic. In order to be married outside the church, you just have to get permission to be, that way it can still be considered one of the sacriments. Just go talk to the church to get it ok'd. It used to be that you had to get married in the church in order for it to be considered in the eyes of God.

would they still consider it a sacriment if were not having a preist perform our ceremony? somebody from my church is (my cousin who's a preacher)
