Relocating...
I'm from Brooklyn and my fiance and I are looking into neighborhoods to buy a house in. He likes Jersey but most of my family lives on the Island. Can anyone tell me where is the furthest on the Island I can get a house (in a good neighborhood) that would be around an hour and fifteen minute commute to Manhattan? How far out in Suffolk could I go without making my commute 2 hours long!!?? Thanks for your help!

I grew up in Three Village. Stony Brook, Setauket, East Setauket area. You can take the train from Stony Brook and it's just under 2 hours, driving is only about an hour but I'm not sure with morning traffic. Also you can take the train from Ronkonkoma that's about an hour and 20 minutes.Three Village is a great place to live.

Re: Relocating...
If you move to anywhere East of Ronkonkoma (exit 58) your commute will be more than 2 hours each way. I live there and my commute to Wall Street area is 2 hours door-to-door. Of course, if you work in Penn Station than your commute would be about 1 hour- 1 3/4 hours, depending on the train you catch. Again it all depends on where you work in NYC and how much time it takes to get there once at the stations. So areas such as Port Jefferson, Stony Brook, Miller Place, Middle Island, Selden, Coram, Lake Grove, Wading River are not for you.I have NO idea what your house budget is going to be, but I can tell you that it is very expensive everywhere now. For a good commute into NYC Huntington has a great station and is part of a main line so lots of trains go there all day/night. You can look at Commack, Kings Park, Smithtown. I am not that good with the South Shore Suffolk areas since I don't live over there but Babylon is nice and has a great station. Hope this helps.

Re: Relocating...
I live in St. James, which is about an hour (sometimes less) car ride to Manhattan, and about a 1 hour and 15 minute train ride. My husband commutes to Queens and Manhattan and doesn't complain much.

Re: Relocating...
We live in Sayville and the Montauk line is about an hour and 20 minutes to Penn station. If you drive up to the Ronkonkoma line there is an express train during peak times that is about an hour. Don't forget to consider your commute once you reach Manhattan, and your commute to the train station on this end. Also, you may want to look into the cost. I think it's over $200 a month for a train pass, then you have the subway or bus once you get to the city.
I'm so thankful that I have a job out here on the Island, only 3.7 miles from home!

Re: Relocating...
No, my wedding is in Manhattan but Im using a lot of LI vendors. Not sure if you rent in Brooklyn or own but I know several people who left Brooklyn and sold their home to go elsewhere. Now that they want to come back, they can no longer afford it since the property cost in Brooklyn has escalated faster than in the suburbs. Just a thought.

Re: Relocating...
If you are looking to move to Suffolk County, and are planning to take the LIRR, I would advise looking somewhere where you will be near the Babylon branch. While Ronkonkoma offers express trains in the am and pm peak times, if you travel any other time, it is an hour between train times. Oh yes, and the peak trains are also very crowded!!Also you could consider taking the train out of Hicksville which both the Port Jeff/Huntington and Ronkonkoma branches stop at. Basically you can get a train every 1/2 hour from there.

Re: Relocating...
I also grew up in Three Village (Stony Brook, Setauket, etc) and it is a great place to live but the commute to NYC really stinks. I am in Port Jefferson now and it takes almost 2 hours to get to NYC by train. If you decide on the north shore, Northport or Centerport (used to live there too) are really beautiful and the train from Huntington (next stop on the LIRR west) is less than an hour from the city.Welcome New Vendors
