I go to curves, I've been going since September. I really like the convenience of it, it being 30 minutes and I'm out of there!!

I think Michele31 went before her pregnancy and she liked it.
I tried it once, but didn't find it challenging enough (I didn't sweat in those 30 mins). I also found that for a petite woman the machines weren't a perfect fit, and they're not really adjustable.
I think sometimes they'll give you a free workout to try it out, so perhaps that would be a good idea, to see if you like it.

I go to the one on 34th Street. I like it so far. It's easy & fast and by the time I am tired of being there it's time to leave.
It's not particularly challenging but it's a whole lot better then me sitting at my desk doing nothing at all like I was. I feel energized when I walk out of the place.
I haven't gone for my first months measurements so I don't know about actual progress yet. But I do feel better just going.

I don't get it. You only go in for 30 minutes? Is it a workout they program they do for you or something?

It's a circuit. There are 8-12 resistance style machines that are in a circle/oval around the room. Between each machine is a recovery station which is just a board you jog in place on (or walk, march, dance, jumping jacks - what every you want to do).
You start out on a recovery station. Every 30 seconds you will be instructed to go to the next station where you will perform the required excercise for 30 seconds, then you switch - alternating between the machines & the recovery stations.
Everyone moves around the circuit at the same time, at the same pace. Depending on the number of times, you circle 2-3 times - this will total approximately 30 minutes.
I like that once you are in the circuit - you don't stop, just change stations.
check out their website Curves I think there's a picture of the circuit there.

Re: Rephrasing the ?? -Does anyone go to CURVES at all?
Kathy, its a workout program that alternates strenght training (i.e. machines) with cardio.
So you do one minute (or even 30 seconds I don't remember) of say 'leg lifts' and then you get off and go on a special pad where you do cardio (jumping jacks, walk, dance, anything you want), after one minute of cardio, you go back to another machine, perhaps this time working your biceps/tricepts, etc.
And you're supposed to complete several circuits, depending on how many machines are in your specific curves place. And you're expected to go at least three times per week.
Does this help?

This helps...doesn't seem like what I am looking for though. I am probably going to still join my DH gym instead.
Thanks girls for your help.

I go to Curves....I joined just before Thanksgiving and I really like it. It's no pressure at all...it starts when you get there, so it's flexible to my schedule (which is of critical importance to me). They just changed their hours so they are open longer (huge plus) and I'm having great success with it. I've lost about 12 lbs, 3.5 inches all over and 2% body fat in the (almost) 3 months since I joined. I am happy b/c I feel better and I also feel like my fitness level and indurance have increased.
Curves is not THE most intense workout, but it DOES work if you work it the right way. The machines are DUAL resistance...so if you are not pushing AND pulling as hard and as fast as you physically can, you will not get the strength training results you hope for. Many women make the mistake of only exerting force in one direction and then letting gravity take over - BIG mistake. The cardio boxes are only to keep your heart rate up and offer your muscles a 'rest' between machines, but again, many women approach the cardio boxes as if they are the only 'intense' part of the workout.
HTH!

That's awsome Claud!
I hope I can say the same thing or something similar after my first 3 months

It varies based on location...I pay $59 in midtown but I think it's $39 or $49 in Queens.
Registration fee is $75 (they say $150 with a promotional half off - but it's been like that since Sept.)
It's a lot for what you get but I use this and never used other memberships at regular gyms.

My mom lost 35 pounds on Curves and she's keeping it off. She still goes. And she looks FANTASTIC!
It didn't work for me because of the hours - I need more flexibility as to when I go work out. FH and I go to Dolphin Fitness in Westbury, and we are losing some weight. I'm losing faster, but I'm counting my points on WW. He's a Top Scorer, he says.
Too Many Peanut Butter Cups.

My husband goes to Dolphin Fitness in Westbury also. That is where I was planning to go too.

I love Curves! I think it's a lot of fun! And if you're not sweating, you're not doing it right, because you control how much resistance the machines give you. So you can get a lot of resistance and work out really hard if you want to, but that's just MHO. I really think its a fun and supportive place. And once you're there, you're in the circuit, you're doing it, there's no thinking or doubting, there's no giving up or 'i'll do the leg press next time', you'rre doing everything and it goes by quickly. it's a real workout if you make it one. I usually go in the back and after stretching do some crunches, while I'm still pumped up from the workout.

It wasn't for me. I got bored quickly with the circuit, and never really broke a sweat.
I was disappointed though, because it's close to my house and a quick workout.
