Replacing windows

How much does it cost? I know it all depends on how big the window is and the type of window you buy but generally is it a major expense?

Re: Replacing windows

We're paying, just for the windows, $8,100 (incl. a sliding glass door and a bow window). But he's a friend of my friend's husband, so he gave us a discount I really don't know how much he charges regularly). We did go to other companies and they were charging us $10,000-12,000 for windows. Keep in mind that our contractor is putting in 18 regular windows, a bow window, a sliding glass door and 3 basement windows. And our regular windows are huge. Not standard size.

Re: Replacing windows

I would consider it a pretty big expense. It depends what kind of windows you get, how many you have, size (are they standard size?) and the quality. I am getting all my windows done next month and did months of research and got about 5 quotes...the regular casements were quoted in the $200-300 range per window. The bow, 3 and 4-panel casement (Anderson) windows were much, much more. The quotes I got varied in price but I saw a big difference from the low end to the high as far as quality of the window and they type of work they did.

Marcela-that is a fantastic price...I wish I had those type of connections...I have none! Can't wait to see all your work - it is getting me so excited for mine next month.

**groans loudly** Why does everything cost so much?? We definitely need new windows too.

Re: Replacing windows

We just replaced two regular windows for about $900. We got specially insulated windows but they were not a fancy design.

There are some windows that (even without installation) are about $2K each.

So it all depends on how many you need and what kind you get.

Re: Replacing windows

My parents are looking to replace 8 windows on the seocnd floor of my house, which is my apartment, and then 3 large windows in the downstairs den.

They are looking for estimates and have gotten ones that are so expensive...I cannot believe how much it costs to replace new windows.

I guess the price is high also, because they have to replace all the window frames too. They are rotted.

If anyone knows a good window installer with good prices, please fm me the info....

Re: Replacing windows

Only 1 window absolutely needs to be replaced, the sliders are a close 2nd (too many drafts!). The windows are definitely not standard - they are all large windows.

Niecey: We couldn't believe the price he gave us, compared to others. We almost passed out. And when we asked him for addresses where we could see his work, we were so happy. He really does amazing work. You can barely see the seams in his siding work.

I will post before and after pics when it's all done

I also wanted to add that we are NOT changing the moldings on the windows except on one regular window. We just got replacement windows, so they just replace the window, not the moldings. Replacing the moldings is very expensive.
