Does anyone know if we can file a complaint to the town against our neighbor? Well it's actually my grandparents' neighbors, we're buying the house though. The house has 3 apartments in it (all illegal I'm sure) with an absentee landlord. The house is in disrepair and has not ONE blade of grass where the front lawn should be, it's all dirt with random piles of leaves, one tenant has a young boy and he has ramps set up so he can ride his mini-ATV around what is becoming a dirt track. There are always several cars in the driveway so when they have guests our driveway is sometimes partially blocked. Just this week they put out their newspapers on recycle day UNTIED and now their papers have blown into our yard as well as the surrounding yards. I won't even mention that the cops were called to the house 3 or 4 times in a matter of 2 months! The house is truly an eyesore and does NOT fit in with the rest of our neighborhood.
We just had the house appraised and I'm certain that our neighbors home will have an effect on our appraisal value. So, does anyone know if you can complain legitimately??

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
You definitely can. Either go to your Village hall if you live in an Incorporated Village or to Town of Hempstead or Town of Babylon, etc..., or wherever you live and make a formal complaint about possible illegal renting. They are cracking down on illegal renting so I'm sure they will listen to you.
Best of luck!

Yes go to town hall and file a complaint for sure. Or do it anonymously by making a phone call from a payphone.

I might do it anonymously, if it can be taken seriously like that. I would be afraid of them retaliating against your home--they know when you are there, and away, and could easily hurt your home or cars if they felt angry.

I do not think you can do it anonymously and they may retaliate and call the town on you in return. We have this going on right now with two of our neighbors and it is gotten so bad that the cops have stepped in.

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
My parents have a neighbor who doesnt cut their grass. One of the neighbors called and complained because the grass was REALLY long. The town came and posted a note on the door that said if they didn't cut it by such and such a day the town would cut it and charge them. I know who called but they do not.
They also have a neighbor who lives across the street they had a big pool with a huge deck put on it. They didn't have any permits for it. someone called and complained and made him take it down. No one knows who called.

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
assuming you know where he/she lives, what about sending an anonymous letter to the owner? if nothing is resolved, then go to the town. and YES, you can make anonymous complaints to the town.

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
My sister in law called the town on our neighbors right after we called in. Im sure they thought it was us because they said to my husband 'we were here for years and never had a problem.' The guy put up a fence on one side of his property to hide the stuff he had in his yard. My husband told him we didn't call. The thing is, I was really mad because we didn't have an issue with the guys stuff he did try to keep things neat and he doesn't have a garage to keep his stuff. I didn't want to start a war with the new neighbors and this just didn't seem like it was something worth the effort. My sister in law had no right to call the town in our behalf. It does sound like you have an issue over there though. Just call the town. They wont tell your neighbors who called.

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
I recently called my town about my neighbor. When they approach them, they don't say who complained. All they say is 'We've gotten some complaints'. When the town arrived, the problems were pretty obivous so there was nothing to debate.

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
I just know theat my neighbor found out some way and called the town on them and it has gone back and forth and each family has spend thousands of dollars to repair things that the town keeps coming in to check. The thing is once the town comes to the area sometimes they start seeing other things on the block and start inspecting other houses on the block.

this type of issue you need to approach delicately...If they know or find out it's you it can make things alot worse. I know that they are only renters...but you have to live there and see them when you go outside...Be careful and tactful.... Really weigh it out before calling the town.
by the way...I'm not saying to not call the town..IMo I would based on what you've told us....but are these people voilent?? could they hurt or vandalize your property or you?Just make sure you're ready in case of the fallout..

Re: Reporting neighbor to town?
My parents put a fence up, since they have a corner lot someone complained they couldn't see the street, which is total bull, this was several years ago and to this day my parents only know it was someone on the block who complained, not the person. The town made them put the corner fence at a 45 degree angle at my parents expense.
