Repost--about my new dachsund

Hi-----My other dog lived about 9-10 years, so it's not like his life was really cut short by a lot. He had back problems, as dachsunds do. Life became more difficult, he was not paralyzed but had very little feeling in his back legs. He had very little control over his bladder. I was living with my parents at the time and they made me put him to sleep.

I sometimes wonder if the neutering procedure had any affect on his back or on his bladder. I know it did not cause all of the problems, but did it make anything worse?

My new dachsund is almost 1 year old. He came to us fully housetrained (just 2 days ago, so far, so good in 2 days). A friend of a friend was getting divorced and neither spouse was able to take the dog. They asked me because they remembered that I love dachsunds. We need to work on teaching him not to beg for food and not to jump up and try to steal from people's plates!!!! Other than that he is a little angel so far.

I can't imagine the neutering procedure contributing to the back/bladder problems.
I've had doxies all my life, my parents were breeders for a while.
We have had experience with the unfortunate back problems that is so common with this breed.

Try to keep your doxie at a slim, healthy weight, so as to not put any excess stress on the back (but it can still happen, even if they are at a good weight).

And congrats on your doxie! They are such loyal companions.

I can't wait to see the pic!
I'll have to post pics of my three (they live at my parents). My parents could never be separated from those three, they love them.

Three-- you are so lucky. They are so cute when they are together. I want to find another dachsie to have play dates with mine.
