Repost-Caribbean Honeymoon-Bad idea?

Hi Ladies,

FH and I were looking into going to St. Martin for our honeymoon. We would be leaving the day after our wedding. Are we asking for trouble if we decide to go there that time of year? I know folks are predicting a teribble hurricane season this fall and I don't know if St. Martin is located in a part of the Caribbean where they are less likely to be hit seriously. I know a lot brides have chosen Aruba for this reason, but we really want to go St. Martin. Should we just scrap the idea and go to another part of the globe?

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I think you'll probably be fine. We're leaving Oct. 10 and really wanted to do the Caribbean, but ultimately decided on Hawaii. I think the hurricanes are usually over by then, but I wouldn't want to worry that the island would be destroyed a month before we were going there.

I would just get travel insurance and keep a close eye on how they fair with the storms leading up to that time.

Sorry for the added stress

We're leaving for Anguilla in August which is right near St. Martin. I'm a little concerned about the hurricanes as well, but I purchased trip insurance. Our travel agent said that the insurance company would either reschedule our honeymoon or send us to another resort that was not affected by the hurricane. I think it only cost us about $150 total, so it's defnitely worth it

Ditto...and for the above, hurricane season is from June 1 - November 30th, so the hurricanes are certainly not 'over' by then. I should know, I was confronted by tropical storms both this year (first week of June on my HM) and about 6 years ago in mid-November while in Jamaica...so that range, while broad, is accurate.
But, trip insurance is a smart choice since there are no weather guarantees. The possibility of nothing happening is there as well, but if something does happen (even a Tropical Depression) you have peace of mind.

To answer your question, yes, St. Maarten is in the Eastern Caribean and that is the part that gets affected the most...all the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.

But don't worry about things you can't help...sending good vibes your way.

it's a risk going anywhere.

David's Bride went to the UK on her HM and there was a terrorist bombing. you just never know what will happen these days!

You should definitely buy travel insurance and hope for the best. that's what we did
