Repost from 06: FH bday is in April..anyone ever tour the wineries on the East End??? Need Help:)

Ok. so here it is.. I am trying to do something really special for FH's bday, cause this year has been kinda tough for me financially and I want to say ThankYou and Happy Birthday all at once. He has been such a source of support, both emotionally and financially.. and I really want to let him know how much it has meant to me.

We are both fans of wine, and are still novices when it comes to knowing what is what. I thought a good idea would be to go out east to the wineries, tour a few.. and sign up for a class at one of them. Any ideas or suggestions? Is this a good idea.. or is it a bust? Has anyone ever done this??? Help, Please

We did this once! It was great, we had such a good time! Bring a lunch - a lot of places have an area for a picnic.

I love going out to the wineries, having a picnic lunch, and then a lobster dinner with a Long Island chardonnay at the Seafood Barge! We were married at a winery on the South Fork, but on the north fork, our favorites are Martha Clara, Raphael, Pelligrini, and Osprey's Dominion. I think it's a great idea!

The Seafood Barge is $$$ We went there for dinner with 4 1/2 (Emma) people in November and it was $360!!!! with only 1 person drinking!

The wineries are great. Most of them have educated people serving the wine to tell you about them. I dont know about tours though... I just want to let you know to stay away from the Premium Wine Group in Mattituck we were there 2 years ago and it was AWFUL wine!! HORRIBLE!

Thanks so much for the advice.. I really want to do something great for his bday. Growing up, he never has had a big birthday party (or for that matter, a communion/confirmation or graduation party!).. He is the oldest of five, and he's always overlooked in his house, cause he's the only one who won't make a stink if something doesn't go his way. So I'm trying to go all out, with our friends.. to really make it a day he'll remember. I hope it makes his day!

Many of the wineries now charge even for the tastings. Martha Clara is a nice one and you can tour the vineyard in a horse drawn carriage but it's one that holds about a dozen people (more rustic looking). It was once part of the Entenmann's estate... YUMMY!
