I just got a call from my Cantor that they will not accept my son into Hebrew School. My husband is catholic and we have a very italian last name but my son had his bris and never had a baptism. They came out when I registered over the phone and told me the Cantor will give me a call. I am so devestated right now. He even asked for the tickets back for the High Holiday.
I am so upset. Does anybody know of any reform temple that will accept us, in Queens. or Little Neck Area the farthest. I just cannt think of their names off the top of head.
I am so upset !!!!!!!!

Wow, that is terrible. I would report them if possible to the association mentioned. Totally discriminating against you and your son - and to ask for the tickets back!

Yes, the temple is reform, I was lucky I didnt have to pay for them since I paid for the school. Yeah, they are a member of UJA. I am so upset I had a crying fit. I need to find a temple so he can go to religion instructions and so I can go for the holidays. Everything starts like Now which puts me under the gun.
How do I contact the UJA?

Truthfully you don't want to be apart of a Temple that would treat you and your family like this. I mean, how awful. I am not Jewish but I even know that a Jewish mother means a Jewish child. Nice of him to treat you with respect...jerk. I would report him ASAP. I am sure you can find a new Temple, one that will welcome you to their family.

thanks but they are the cheapest and I am looking for another temple at this point especially for the holidays. My brother and I bot had our bar/Bat mitzvahs there and it is the same Cantor. All other temples school is on Sundays which conflicts with Church for my husband. I think they do it that way for a reason. I would have liked to send him to catholic school too. But obiously now I am afraid. I have gotten quotes to join from anywhere from 500 - 1500.

I agree with Michele, I am so sorry that that Cantor will not accept your son!!! What does having an Italian last name have anything to do with wanting to raise your child Jewish... I hope you find a temple that you are comfortable with, I'm sure you will!

Contact them at http://www.uja.org
maybe go and talk to the cantor face to face maybe he can explain to you why they will not let your son attend. because if you are jewish then your son is jewish... good luck

he said no because I want to take him to church once in awhile. Why should I deny my son his heritage when his father is roman catholic I was rtiased conservative4 and turned reform when I married.

He said No because of Church? I am not sure what the word is for someone who is anti-Christian but he is the equvilant of an anti-semite. I mean, I went to Temple a few times with friends when I was younger. My mom thought it was important for me to know about other religious experiences. We are all in this World together. And anyone who wants to penalize your child for going to Church (a place of God) is not really someone you should want your child around. What if he tells him 'your father's religion is wrong' or something like that. I think your child has every right to know about and understand his father's beliefs. In fact, IMO it is your responsiblity to make sure he does. You are being a good mother and a good wife.
I never understand the concept of paying to attend religious services. Call a reformed Temple and speak to them. I am sure you will find a Cantor who will welcome you with open arms. If there is a financial difficulty speak to them about that too.
