Repost from SD: Hmm, Mat Pilates, anyone?

I thinking of going to this new class at my local gym. it's called Mat Pilates. I know the instructor is great becase I take his other 2 classes on Mondays. But I always felt that pilates is very boring, however I heard you can get amazing results.
Anyone has any input?

If you really stick with it - you will REALLY see differences. You just have to be diligent!
I would supplement my weekly classes with a pilates video for best results and do it maybe 4 or 5 x a week.

Good Luck with it!

I do pilates at home and since I started doing it 4-5x a week I've seen a tremendous difference in my strength and muscle tone. My stomach has definition I've never seen before. I never heard of Mat Pilates though, so I don't know what the difference is.

Mat Pilates just refers to Pilates done on a mat instead of on a Pilates machine.

DEFINETLY TRY IT!!! it's great for strengthing your abs, hamstrings and back (YOUR CORE)....Mat, sage got it right, referrs to pilates done on the floor, no machine, somethings soft weighted medicine balls, bands, or rings are used for additional resitance.

can i do it in my regular sneakers or do I need some type of gymnastics shoes?

it's usually done barefoot, so wear clean socks and you use a padded mat, not a yoga one, so your joints/bones don't dig into the ground

I have been going to a pilates studio for mat classes for a year and a half now. I ended up finding a wonderful instructor. She really works us for the hour we are there. We never stop moving. I have taken the class with other instructors and nothing compares to the instructor I usually have. I think it depends who is teaching it. Also, some gyms have instructors that get certified in a weekend. The instructors at the studio I go to have over 900 hours of training. Oh...as for footwear, we take our sneakers off and just leave our socks on.
