Repost: Where to adopt a Kitty

I figured these boards are more active then the Newleywed boards. I need 08ers help!
My poor friend has to put her new Kitty to sleep because she got her from a shelter and she is so sick. No cure. She just lost her other Kitty a month ago. Anyways I know nothing at all about cats, Im a dog person. I would like to get her a Kitty for Christmas. Where should I go????? I need your help big time on this one. Thanks in advance

Definitely try North Shore Animal League!!! My FH and I adopted our kitten from there almost a year ago and we couldn't be happier. They will cover the the cost of spaying or neutering and the shots are cheaper than if done at a regular vet. Def check them out! nsal.org

Most shelters will not adopt any animal around Christmas time. I'm told they do this in the best interest of the animals, so they aren't given to individuals not prepared to have and properly care for a pet.

I would check your local classifieds to see kittens for sale or being given away.

I volunteer at the Freeport Animal Shelter and we most definitely adopt animals around Christmas time. The family needs to be aware of their holiday situation and will not bring a new animal into a crazy house. Most places will let you adopt them and then hold them until after the holiday as well.

I second Petfinder.com and also 1-800-save-a-pet.com

North Shore is a rather pretentious animal resuce if i do say so. Maybe it is the fact that they know they are a multi- million dollar operation. I would definitely go to a town shelter where you can save a cat from being put down. Town of Hempstead is overrun with animals.

Valley Stream Cat Rescue has kitties for adoption.
You can look them up on PetFinder.com
or you can go to the Petco in Garden City or New Hyde Park to see some of them in person.

We have gotten 4 cats from them over the years and they are the bestest kitties ever.
