Republican Convention

Original post by don424

Are your companies making any special arrangements for employees during the convention?

Do you have an arrangement with friends/family in the city, should we need to get out?

Just want to make sure everyone is safe

Re: Republican Convention

My company is making emergency evacuation plans, etc., beefing up on security etc. And my boss told us if we have an extra long commute (like I now do since moving) or if we are just terrified of coming in (which I am ) that we can work from home.

makes me sick

Ty for checking on us, Don!

FH & I are good to go, we don't work in the city. FMIL works 3 blocks from FBIL's woman. So all is good.

i'm sort of in a weird position now b/c i work in hoboken and live in midtown. as far as i know my company isn't doing anything special. i have a feeling a lot of people will be taking vacation. i suppose i should learn about alternate routes (i usually take the path) home and figure out where i'd stay if i were stuck in hoboken. my greatest wish is for them to close the company for the week

LOL... I think people are overreacting to this. Its not really that big a deal. Business as usual.

Then again I was born and raised in the city. I am actually going to be much closer to the convention than I normally am for that week since I am in network training. My school is much closer to the convention than my job is.

I am taking the F train to work. No biggie. Life goes on.

I just have faith in the city knowing they will have the place secure. Thats all. Nothing bad is going to happen.

I don't worry about things that are frankly... out of my control.

i had faith in the city too, on Sept 10, 2001.

I felt sick coming into Penn this morning. Nothing 'LOL' about this.

Yeah and just like somebody above said... 'we live in a different time now'. That was an unfortunate tragedy that happened back then.

There is PLENTY more security in the city now then there was three years ago. Don't you think that the city will do what it takes to have the place secure.

Actually... its times like these where I feel the SAFEST and WANT to fly. I would rather fly on the day of a huge convention where security is beefed up 10x than fly on an average day (like Sept. 11th) where people are lax thinking nothing is going to happen.

I don't know, I just don't feel safe. It's a feeling I can't explain. Maybe everything will be fine, who knows.

That would be a very big NO. I do not trust that the city will EVER be secure enough ... just too many ways to get in, and not nearly enough checking of people.

The subway is the classic example. I do not care how many cops are standing inside or outside of the stations, if they aren't stopping people/checking bags .. well then they'll be dead too when someone decides to light a pipe bomb or throw noxious gas ...

Re: Republican Convention

I would have taken off that week just so I dont have to deal with the traffic BS. I am owed so many days so I figured why not.

But there is a sweet network class that I want to take and I dont want to postpone it two months... and that class goes on for that entire week of the convention.

I could have said nah... ill wait. But no way. I am not going to let fear run my life. My school is on 6th ave and 42nd street. A block away from Times Square and about 10 blocks from the convention.

And to get to my class... I have to take the train in which would be the easiest way to get into the city (opposed to bus which I normally take... and driving).

i don't think it has anything to do with where you grew up. i mean good for you, you grew up in the city. does that make you tougher than the rest of us???

i don't think people are overreacting at all. you do realize what a big target bush is right? not just for al quaeda or international terrorism, but i'm sure there are other crazy domestic groups that would love to get their hands on him or otherwise disrupt the convention.

i'm glad you have such faith in the beefed up security. me, i'm not that naive. i know that know matter what they do they can't be prepared for every situation and no matter how great they say security is there will always be holes. i'll go about my business as usual that week, but i'm not gonna pretend i'm not scared. sorry, but i really don't feel like dying this year. if you've come to terms with that possibility well then more power to you.

I am not accusing anybody of anything. I am just saying that I have faith in the security that the city (and government) will have. Don't be hatin' based on how I feel. You can feel however you want.

I cannot speak for anyone else here so I am not comparing. However does the way I feel about this week make me strong willed? You damm right.

I guess I agree with you. With all the security, I don't think there will be a large scale terrorist attack. I think there may be more chaos created by demonstrators than anything else. But, I think if the terrorists were going to do something, they would do it when we least expected it.

While I do not see a big attack happening, I can see radicals strapping bombs to themselves and blowing themselves up admist big crowds.

My plan is that I will go about business as usual, but I will stay out of the trains, I take an express bus anyway -- I'm going into work and leaving work early to avoid rush hour, but I will be here.

No one's 'hatin' you based on how you feel. Everyone's entitled to how they feel. However, just like you don't want anyone 'hatin' on you, do not make light of other people's feeling by laughing at them with your little guy and saying LOL, people are overreacting ...

Re: Republican Convention

I don't really think it's a matter of how safe the city is or how beefed up security will be that week I think we all learned the hard way of what can happen at any time.

I think it's everyone's responsibility to be prepared in case something happens.

I keep extra pair of sneakers in my office in case I have to walk home again. I have a little mini mag flashlight with fresh batteries in case I have to walk down 10 flights of stairs in the dark again. Having these things available does not mean I live in fear, just that I am ready and I have been ever since the black out.

While fear is not running my life and I am anticpating nothing more then train delays and aggrevation during the week of the convention, I am prepared in the event something were to happen.
