Resignation Letter

Resignation Letter

ok..so I have to resign from my job..I am not happy about it, because it's a job that I love, with a great boss, and great co-workers. Unfortunately, I won't be able to commute from Pt. Jeff Station to Brooklyn. So, my question is this:
What do I say in the resignation letter? Do I tell them that we bought a house, and we're moving? Won't they realize that it was in the works for some time now, (you obviously don't buy a house overnight) and they might look at me as being deceptive? (does that make sense?) I was thinking about giving them like a month's notice (if thats even appropriate)....but I'm afraid that they'll be bitter about it and decided to let me go the same day. Then I'll be out of a job a month earlier than we anticipated. What should I do..???

TIA

Re: Resignation Letter

I think that you should put all in your resignation letter and give as much notice as possible. I doubt that they will be bitter and will probably be appreicative of your efforts. If they do tell you to leave right away, you are entitled to pay.

Anyway, here it goes,

Dear....

I wanted to thank you for this opportunity to work within this company. I deeply regret to inform you that my last day of employment will be ....

You then tell them how much you liked working with them and how much you learned.

I hope that helps..

How about a conversation with your boss explaining what has happened and how it looks like you won't be able to keep up the commute. She/He may even offer you some sort of work/share work from home arrangement.

So, if that doesn't happen, I think a candid conversation first would work best. Give them time to find someone to replace you and offer to train them. I have never submitted a letter of resignation.

Good luck with your new home

Re: Resignation Letter

the thing is, I've only been here since early Jan...the person who I replaced, trained me for about 3 weeks, and has since transitioned into his new role already...I'll basically be leaving them without a replacement unless they fill my position immed. ..I'd be more than willing to train the next person, I just don't know how they're going to handle it.
My boss has told me on numerous occasions what a great job I'm doing, and how much of an asset I am to the company.
Thats what makes this even more difficult for me. I just don't know.... I feel guilty about leaving, but excited about the house and move, etc....its bitter sweet.

Is it possible to work from home part time and only commute a couple of days a week?

More than likely not. They probably would rather replace me altogether, than re-arrange the company structure to 'accomodate' little ol' me, which is completely understandable.

Since you described your boss as 'great' I would not worry too much about them being bitter and trying to force you out before you want to leave. I think offering to train your replacement is fair. I hope they understand and I hope you're able to find a new job that you like as much!

Hi Christina,

I would say give maybe three wekss since two weeks is normal and since you have a good relationship and dont want to screw them over you are doing the right thing by giving them an extra week. I know how hard it is before i became a teacher i worked in HR for four yrs and to leave my last job was hard even though i wasnt happy there b/c i felt like i was screwing them over ( i was only there a short time too) but in the end they were happy for me b/c i was pursuing my dream. They wil understnd that you are moving and should be happy for you.

Best of luck to you... I wish all my studnets could be like your Danielle what a doll.

it doesn't hurt to ask...that could be a good way to break the news. This way you have already com eup with a solution to the problem. Makes for a good reference later on if they say no.
