Rev Janine Burns

Are any of you ladies using her as your officiant? I have an appt to meet with her and have no clue even what she costs or if I will have to give her a deposit the day I meet her if I decide to book.
Also...I am Jewish and FH is Catholic. I know she does interfaith marriage's but am I really allowed to be married by a Reverand???!!
Help!

Re: Rev Janine Burns

I havent used her. Whether you're allowed to be married by a reverand is up to you, your tradition and your rabbi. Technically there doens't need to be a rabbi at a jewish wedding. FH just needs to give you something of value and say the haray aht in front of two jewish witnesses who are are not related to you or each other.
But every tradition and every individual is going to have a different perspective on this. Consult with a rabbi you trust, or just think about how it feels to you to be married by a reverend, decide which aspects of the jewish wedding tradition you'd like to include or need to include to make it feel like you've had a wedding that sufficiently honors your tradition. Good Luck

I wanted to add that FH is Jewish and that while we agred that the ain officiant (you cna only have one officiant who signs the legal documents etc) is going to be the priest or deacon, he's okay with that because we are going to have a rabbi as well and also incorporate many of the major elements of a traditional jewish wedding. We also found christian texts to coincide with jewish traditions and vice versa, so we could tie it in, and tie in the similarities in the teachings.

Thank you. Actually, I guess interfaith is not really what we wanted to do..non-denominational is more like it..so there would not be a rabbi.
I just didn't think I was supposed to get married by a reverand, even if the ceremony isn't religious.
I'm not very religious at all , thats why I don't even know.

If you're not religious, then I don't see why it would matter.

I'm not saying that to be rude, I'm just saying it. I mena generally how much that would matter reflect how religious you are and/or what sect of judaism you're a part of. You might want to ask a friend or family member to refer a rabbi to you if you want to discuss it further.

The temple we go to sometimes in NHP is awesome, 1/3 of the families there are interfiath

This is from weddingdetails.com and is consistent with what I've read and been told by rabbis

With all the differences, Jewish weddings have much in common. The Rabbis who wrote Jewish law, Halakhah, made it easy for couples to marry with minimal requirements.
A Kosher Jewish wedding may consist of the following: the bride accepts an object worth more than a dime from the groom, the groom recites a ritual formula of acquisition and consecration. These two acts are witnessed, and that is it. Everything else is a custom: the canopy (chuppah), the seven wedding blessings, the breaking of a glass and even the presence of a Rabbi.

The wedding ceremony may be conducted in a synagogue, temple or other location of the couple's choosing: many are in the same site as the reception. The ceremony is usually performed by a Rabbi if held in a synagogue

Re: Rev Janine Burns

Thank you so much.
I just called my dad and asked him what he thought and he told me that getting married by a reverand would be fine as long as there is no mention of christ. Like I said, I'm not really religious but I know that if I'm not having a traditional jewish wedding then I'm not having a catholic wedding either.
Thanks again for your thoughts and advice.

Re: Rev Janine Burns

We met with her based on the recommendation of the owner of our hall. Our first meeting we loved her & booked her right away. We never saw her again. SHe canceled 5 apts on us & left all these wacky messages & excuses on our machine. WE even drove all the way to the hotel to meet her after work, only to realize she wasn't there. She had left a message on our HOME machine with some wacky story. I don't know if she had something personal taking away from her work, but she was real spacey.

We ended up emailing her our ceremony choices...I will give her that, she has a lot of beautiful (non religious) ceremony ideas. That is the only thing she has organized really well.

ANyway...she Doesn't come to rehearsals at the MICC unless you really want it there. She said the owner knows what to do, so we didn't have her come. No problem.

We got to the club several hrs prior to the wedding to take pictures. AT that time the club owner said 'I don't want to stress you out, but Rev Burns is not coming.' WHAT?? She apparently wrote down the WRONG Time of our wedding & had double booked herself. (I donate know how she thought she was going to make it from eastern Suffolk to Nassau with the time she thought our wedding was at anyway.) SO anyway, we kept our cool. SOme stand in reverend woman came & almost everything worked out. She said 'DO you Brian take Regan...' That would be fine except my husbands name is Jason!!! It was good for a laugh.

I wasn't even too annoyed that she didn't come, I was really mad that she never even called US to let us know. In the end we got the ceremony we picked & the stand in did a good job.

To answer your ?- I would NOT recommend Rev Burns, as she is really flaky. Nice, but flaky.

Re: Rev Janine Burns

Oh I almost forgot!

I saw a ceremony with April from Church of the Ancient Ways (an LIW vendor) and she was SO wonderful. She has answered a lot of my questions about so many things even though she's not my officiant (I need a priest anda rabbi), and I would defintiely use her if I had need of interfaith clergy. She really made the ceremony meaningful and beautiful and personal.

We are using her. We met with her a while back and thought she was really organized and had lots of ideas. We booked her over a year before our wedding and since then she has contacted us a few times just to see how planning was going. She has also offered to let me bounce ideas off of her (programs, ceremony decorations, etc) since she has seen her fair share. So far, so good.

Also..she charges $600 (high end of range I think). You don't have to bring a deposit with you when you meet her. You can discuss and think about it and send a check if you want to book. Good luck
