Ribbon for cakes

ok so i'm getting a whip cream frosting (against my will, but we don't have the $$$$ to upgrade ) for my cake and i want it to be as smooth as possible so it looks like fondant and i want ribbon on the bottom of each tier. My bakery said i ahve to provide the ribbon and it can't be satin. THey said it has to be a plastic-y material. Does ANYONE have ANY suggestions on where to find this ribbon??? PLEASE i only have 2 days!!!!!!!!!!!

TIA!!!!!!

really? was your cake whipped cream??

I called the bakery and the man i spoke to didn't speak english very well and the lady who does the wedding cakes is off on tuesdays i even called 2 other bakeries and one didn't understand what i wanted and the other told me they'd have to call me back tomorrow! i don't have until tomorrow!!!!!! I've tried Michaels and AC Moore. They had some ribbon there but it was too thick and not in the color i need. I read on a few cake blogs/threads that I could try a florist, but i was hoping someone on here might have had this same experience and had some advice. I will try that website out and see what happens.

ETA: THANKS GIRLS!!!!!!

Re: Ribbon for cakes

My cake was buttercream and I had ribbon on the bottom of each layer.

I bought waterproof ribbon from the wholesale flower place where I bought my vases from.

This worked perfectly, nothing stained the ribbon and it stayed the correct color.

I bought it at the a Wholesale Shop in the Flower district in Manhattan..it is exactly what you need for your cake and they have all colors. I found the perfect green that matched my wedding colors.

FM me if u want the info...

-you can see my cake in my avatar pic. Go to my albums to see the same pic larger. The buttercream was so smooth it had the look of fondant without the price.

well i never saw my cake but i believe it was butter cream...maybe thats the difference why we were allowed a satin ribbon...i dont see much of a different in texture but...im not a baker! i know excatly what kind of ribbon you need i think best bet would be a.c. moore or michaels...im sure if you describe it they will know what your talking about! hope you can find it!

Re: Ribbon for cakes

thanks so much!

I heard that the butter cream will do the same thing as whipped cream, so I don't know what my bakery is talking about not being able to use a satin ribbon.

JEEEZZZZZ who woulda ever thought 3 days before my wedding i'd be stressing about RIBBON for my cake

I wanna get to the fun part already!!

If you want to use sation ribbon, please do this:

Take clear tape and place it around the back of the ribbon (the side which will touch the cake) This clear tape creates a barrier between the buttercream/whipped cream and the ribbon and it will not soak through. Ribbon will not get greasy or discolored. This way the color of your ribbon stays intact.

Only problem is that you have to do a couple feet of ribbon, so that the bakery has enough to work with when placing the ribbon around the tiers.

PS. I did alot of research into this so if you dont get the waterproof ribbon just use the trick above and you will be fine

ok yes i saw this on one of the blogs. they used wax paper behind the ribbon and that worked. orrr i could do 2 layers of ribbon on each tier, but that would be double the ribbon i'd need to buy. i think im going to go with the tape/wax paper trick. Thanks so much!

Re: Ribbon for cakes

You should check where the curling ribbon is in Michaels...I think that's what they're talking about. A thicker ribbon that would be used on gifts.

I was thinking of the wrapping paper type also. What about Target or even a Hallmark store? Any place that carries a variety of wrapping supplies.

I was told the ribbon should not have wire in it, fyi, if that helps!

Re: Ribbon for cakes

Aw...I hope you got the ribbon situation all figured out!! I prefer the buttercream frosting over the fondant...Im not a fondant fan...and my cake lady did an amazing job on how smooth it was, you couldnt even tell the difference!! I also did ribbon around mine and I was just told no wire in it....
