ring cleaning ?

Okay, so there is one thing that i do not like when it comes to engagement rings. dirty rings!!! how sad is it when men spend lots of $$$ on rings, and yet they still get all crusty and foggy and grimey. it is sad. some girls never clean their rings and then they don't sparkle. like, how can you say 'oh, what a beautiful ring' when it lookes like it's last cleaning was circa 1982? is that a diamond or an opal??? just kidding. but i use the conossieurs red jar and the little toothbrush tube they have, but i was wondering what everyone else uses. how much does it cost to go to the jewelers and get the ring steamed? is sonic better? how often is too often???any secrets???

The jewler told me to use dishwashing liquid,... he said that its the best... I have the ionic machine and it works good... I've also tried amonia, but he said that it leaves a film. Hope this helps!

jeweler gave us some blue stuff that comes with it...

my trick (which i love) i'm in the mall where the jeweler is located, they said come in anytime to have your ring clean... so when i go shopping (i really need to do more of that) i always get my ring clean at the store.. it looks new again!!!

I soak it in alcohol. Then I rinse it in soap and water and it sparkles!!

alcohol and a little brush and it's as good as new!

Alcohol and a soft toothbrush -- learned that trick on here! It looks beautiful afterwards and I don't think alcohol leaves a film or residue like dish soaps and blue stuff do. Also, whenever I'm the mall I have it steamed and the platinum polished. If I have the platinum polished they charge more but if I just have it steamed it's like a dollar.

Same hear. I soak it, brush the underside and rinse in water.

These sound like great techniques.

there was once a thread on here about this .... (cannot find it now, though..) I am an OBSESSIVE ring cleaner, its ridiculous but I clean it constantly.

I personally think cleaning with alcohol is the best too -- and I've tried a lot. I have the jewlery clearners in the jar but never think they do as good a job as good old alcohol and a toothbrush!!

The one way I heard NOT to clean your ring is to use WINDEX. It looks VERY sparkly at first, but it actually leave some sort of blueish residue.

I had this issue with amonia and dish soap. One of them was leaving a yellow residue on my (colorless!) stone. I switched to alcohol and it's much, much better.

If you use a really soft toothbrush, it should be ok -- but I actually only use the toothbrush mostly for inside the ring, underneath the stone. The alcohol usually makes the stone sparkly enough on its own!

Re: ring cleaning ?

Yes I use a soft toothbrush and gently do the stone and outside- but really scrub the inside grime away

Someone once told me to go buy the little super soft brushes they sell for babies!! No way that can scratch a diamond. Rmemeber, they are the hardest substance known to man. (Oooh I can hear the jokes about that line already!!!)

Re: ring cleaning ?

My jewler told me to use windex with a toothbrush and then dry it with a blowdryer. They said that it will provide the same effects of their power cleaner. I also use a jewlery cleaner that I got at Kmart for $3, it works wonderfully, I think that it is mostly ammonia. The only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond, if a toothbrush is scratching your diamond, then you need to put the FH up on the stand, he he he!!!

It won't scratch the stone...but it could scratch the metal. I use the little jeweler's brush (that came with a cleaner) but only on the underside of the diamond.
