A friend at work gave me advice on cleaning my e-ring....and it worked really well so I wanted to share.
Soak your ring in windex for a couple of minutes and then brush it w/a soft toothbrush and then run it under warm water - results: a real sparkly ring!!!

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
My fiance got mad at me when I put windex on my ring to make it shine. He said that chemicals primarily ammonia can ruin the ring?? So he took an iron and used the steam to clean the ring. I looked so nice! I need it cleaned but am scared of taking it to a jewler after hearing that they can try to switch the diamonds on you.

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
A jeweler told me soak my ring in a mixture of water and dishwashing liquid and then scrub it with a soft toothbrush. I did that and I my ring looked great.

You can buy the jewelry steamer from the jewelry judge in garden city, it's great!

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
water with a splash of ammonia works very well, too!!!
there is nothing wrong w/ using ammonia on your ring.
I've found that the solution works better HOT - so pop it in the microwave before you dip your ring! (This goes for the windex too.)
the follow up the dipping with a soft toothbrush scrub, and voila! Good as new.

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
you cant switch a diamond that fast. if they start to take it to the back where u cant see them clean it then be suspicious but otherwise its usually done in front of u

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
Our jeweler gave us a cleaner but our appraiser said Windex works as well, but in time it can have an affect not on the diamond but on the gold/platinum. She suggested dishwasher detergent & warm water & a soft toothbrush.

our jeweler gave us a jewelry steamer.. but in the kit it said to soak in Ammonia or half ammonia half water first... so it shouldn't ruin your ring. Also, my cousin was a gemologist and said that boiling works (DO NOT do this with everything) i know it is ok with diamond, but not all stones and i KNOW NOT Pearls!) i have been using window cleaner and a tooth brush.. faster than waiting for water to boil... Check with you jeweler..

My jeweler told us to use ammonia and warm water, works great! I don't do it very often and take it to him twice a year for it's checkup/cleaning.

Re: Ring Cleaning!!
My dad used to be a jeweler and he always says to use warm water with a little ammonia and soak it and then clean it off with warm or hot water. My mom cleaned her ring like this and 32 years later it still sparkles like a new ring. Windex leaves a residue even if you cant see it right away, and is for glass not diamonds and has all these chemicals in it. The reason why it probably seems to work is because ammonia is one of the ingredients--but you are also adding other ingredients to the mixture when the pure ammonia is what is doing the trick. Why put other chemicals on your diamond if all you need is the ammonia?? Ive been cleaning my own ring alot like my moms and the ammonia is definately not harmful my dads friends in the diamond district who have been working for three generations back say to use ammonia only. Dont even really need a toothbrush with ammonia--just to run it under warm water. Sounds like I own stock in ammonia, huh? But really, it works the best.

I belong to a message board about diamonds and rings with over 8000 members and the overwhelming consensus is that ultrasonic cleaners are best... along with steam of any kind, and ammonia to an extent. The person above who said that windex leaves a residue is right - my gemologist friend said that as well even if it isn't immediately obvious.
The ammonia by itself is fine but CAN degrade certain metals over time. Also there is an UNBELIEVABLY GREAT cleaner called GemCare that is a natural botanical but actually works better than dish detergent and makes diamonds stay clean longer!!! FM me if you want info. My other friend who is an appraiser gave that to me.
Here is a pic I took of my diamond RIGHT AFTER being cleaned in the GemCare!
This is so true. This is exactly how I clean both my e-ring and my wedding band which is an eternity band. It really sparkles a whole lot. I boil the water and make sure it is hot.
