Ring Cleaning!!

Original post by chellynyc

A friend at work gave me advice on cleaning my e-ring....and it worked really well so I wanted to share.

Soak your ring in windex for a couple of minutes and then brush it w/a soft toothbrush and then run it under warm water - results: a real sparkly ring!!!

I belong to a message board about diamonds and rings with over 8000 members and the overwhelming consensus is that ultrasonic cleaners are best... along with steam of any kind, and ammonia to an extent. The person above who said that windex leaves a residue is right - my gemologist friend said that as well even if it isn't immediately obvious.

The ammonia by itself is fine but CAN degrade certain metals over time. Also there is an UNBELIEVABLY GREAT cleaner called GemCare that is a natural botanical but actually works better than dish detergent and makes diamonds stay clean longer!!! FM me if you want info. My other friend who is an appraiser gave that to me.

Here is a pic I took of my diamond RIGHT AFTER being cleaned in the GemCare!

Pricescope or Diamondtalk, by any chance? what's your username?!

You bet!!! Check your forum mail please. I can't get enough of the diamonds and settings on those sites and others... ahhhhhhh!

I think ammonia is the chemical in those jewelry cleaners you can buy.

It's just really a controversy... *SOME* gemologists and appraisers feel that ammonia can slightly degrade SOME metals over time. Others think it's fine. I'd do the research online and decide for yourself. The GemCare I spoke of though was suggested by one of the most respected appraisers and that one does NOT have ammonia but works so well. There are many other options like I said though that include steaming, ultrasonic, etc.

FM me if you want more info but I'm sure you all will find a great solution. I L VE sparklies!
