My understanding is that you will always need to get white gold dipped every year or so. It doesn't matter what jeweler sets it for you, this will always be the case.
The only alternative is setting it in platinum. The one issue with platinum is that it will develip patina over time. It may not look nice for the first few months but they slowly buff out naturally. I have a platinum setting myself and I actually don't notice ANY patina on mine. It's probably more noticeable on thick bands men wear. I'm personally a fan of platinum but it's definitely personal preference!

I was thinking platinum as an option, too. I just kind of feel bad having him spend all of this extra money!

Ring Dipping vs New Setting
can you get the same setting made just in white gold from another jeweler? mine is white gol and I haven't had any issues with mine and it is white gold. I do have a yellow gold ring that I dip every 10-12 months and it looks great for about 8-10 months and then I am due. I am just to cheap to have it done more often.
eta: white gold does not always need to be redipped. I have a lot of white gold pieces and I have never had to redip any of them.

Ring Dipping vs New Setting
Honestly, I've had my ring for almost a year now, and I don't see any wear on it. I don't know how long you've been engaged, but if it's that bad already, I'd consider getting another setting somewhere else. Maybe you can trade your current setting and only have to cover the difference to offset some of the cost.

Ring Dipping vs New Setting
Dipping rate depends on your body chemistry and how often its exposed to abrassives and water, chemicals, etc. My mom's wedding and e-ring are white gold and she has only dipped 1x in 4 years. I've only had mine for 7 months but no sign yet of wear..and I never take mine off. I wouldn't consider having to dip it as a reason to not get white gold...but maybe you can have a different shop dip it..might help?

I feel so much guilt telling him I think we need to get a new setting--after he insists we dip it.

Good Old Gold in Massapequa On Sunrise Highway. They're good people who are passionate about what they do and they take care of anything as if it were their own.

A girl at work JUST told me all about them! We'll definitely be checking them out, thanks!

This is what I'm concerned about. She said its because I work in a medical office and use my hands a lot. You work in a restaurant and ALSO use your hands a lot. He keeps saying lets just get it dipped, but the same crap is going to happen again! I think we need a new setting, in platinum.
Do you use a lot of hand sanitizer or anything like that with soap/antibacterial in it? That may make the yellowing worse. I wash my hands constantly in the restaurant, but I NEVER use antibacterial or hand sanitizer bc I have very sensitive skin and it gives me hives. That may be the difference?
I'd try dipping it once after discussing with FH that if this doesn't work, and there's yellowing again lets say, 3 months before your wedding, you'll look into getting a new setting. It's worth a shot if you don't want to spend so much money on a new setting (which I wouldn't want to do).

I would go platinum- you won't run into the same problems. It will cost about 4-700 hundred dollars though, depending on where you go. My jeweler told me that for wedding bands, add about an extra 500 bucks if you want platinum, so I would assume the same holds for the engagement ring

ALL the time. Working in a doctor's office makes you want to constantly sanitize. Never knew this! Thanks for the info!

Ring Dipping vs New Setting
I never knew using hand sanitizer did this either! I've considered getting mine dipped too. The only part I think looks 'yellow' is the prongs (Mine is white gold). Every once and awhile I want another setting then other days I just love my ring. I should get it professionally cleaned & see how it looks.
As far as bringing it somewhere & them swapping it out, my friends prong broke & they let her hold onto her diamond while it got fixed then set it w her there. Hope this helps
