rings...

Ok, well, me and my guy are at a point where we have decided that fall 2004 sounds like a good time for the big event. Thing is.. no ring yet. I KNOWS I am dying for a ring/proposal to make it official. He is saving for the ring, and I have already taken him so he knows the style I like.
Now I wait.
He is so great, he has even suggested we go out to the vinyards this weekend to see them in the fall. He also wants to take me to see where his sister was married (forget what its called) because he think I will like it. I dont feel that he is unsure about getting married, but I still feel wierd doing any of the planning (even if it is preliminary stuff) without the ring.

Does anyone know what the average ring costs? I mean, i know there is a huge range, but what would say... a 1 ct emerald cut in white gold cost? or somethitn similar? Any ranges out there? I want to know why it is taking him so long LOL

Every design and diamond is a different price. You should check different websites if you want to see prices or different styles.

Whenever your BF gives you the ring it will be worth it. I promise you.

Here's a thought...maybe his little trip to the vineyard this weekend has some deeper meaning behind it!!

Also for price ranges and good ideas on quality, check out sites like bluenile.com...they have charts laying all that out.

Ha, DD, didn't think of that. Really I dont think so though. We were talking about it two weeks ago and I am under the impression he hasn't quite saved enough yet. I am thinking more like November or January. I don't think he would do it now, or in Oct cause my bday is october, and i dont think he woudl do it by the holidays. Never know though, we'll see.

You guys will be among the first to know LOL

Re: rings...

A 1ct emerald cut ring can have a huge range in price from mid $2Gs to over $15,000. There's so many variables that come into play with diamonds!

definitely check out bluenile to get an idea in the differences!

Re: rings...

Thanks Jenny, i have heard this, and I really hope he isn't holding out for the 'perfect' diamond. I want something nice, but I would rather have a nice ring and be engaged now than a spectacular ring and be engaged in a year.

I told him I like the emerald cuts, but I have also showed him pictures of other rings I like that are not emerald cut so that he knows that it is ok NOT to get the emerald cut.

Is there a polite way of saying 'you don't have to save $4mill .. just buy the darn thing! ' LOL

Re: rings...

I used to think FH was taking too long looking for the right ring but it is difficult. They are expensive and they want to make sure they find exactly what they are looking for. Its not easy. They may find a great ring but the diamond may not be right.

Honestly, relax and just let it happen.. I hate to be rude.. I'm apologize, but you should be lucky that he wants to do those things with you in spite of the fact that you don't have a ring yet...Good things come to those who wait..

P.S. before FH proposed, he told me that he was saving up money and couldn't wait to put a ring on my finger and that he had hoped to do it by next year some time (2003)...he proposed three days later!

I am extremely happy that I am lucky enough to have a guy like him. I am also happy that he is interested in helping me plan.
Trust me, I don't take for granted the fact of how lucky he and I are, and we tell each other every day

I guess, I just don't want to feel silly doing the pre-planning. I am sure that when he does propose it will be everything I could dream of and more, cause thats just who he is.

I have a non-related question, and please forgive me for asking too much: Why do you like emerald cut over round cut? I am really just curious, b/c i heard that emerald cuts don't sparcle as much? May be I heard wrong? I hope so.

Re: rings...

Mims107, I personally understand your frustration, b/c I waited quite a while for my ring. We've been planning along with no ring.
I finally got it recently, and am happy as can be, especially since he got me exactly what I wanted and didn't skimp !!!!!

But I never considered myself lucky b/c he was willing to plan w/me. We decided together we would get married, and when. We love each other, and we are both lucky to have found each other, and we both should be planning.

But do try and be patient, it does have it's rewards. I love my ring, and I'm glad he took his time to get the perfect one for me. It was definitely worth the wait.

Re: rings...

This is true, the emerald cut don't sparkle as much, mostly because there aren't as many facets or cuts on the diamonds. I guess it is just a look. To me they are very classic/elegant looking. Problem is, because you can pretty much see right into the center of the diamond it is easy to see any irregularities and such in the stone, and thus can be very expensive.

I am by no means an expert on stones, this is just what I have heard.

Re: rings...

alina this is an example of an emerald cut stone.... I love this stone style (although the ring is a bit fancy for me)

Re: rings...

That is true about emerald cuts. They don't sparkle as much because they don't have as many facets as a round. I have an emerald cut and I love it! I love the fact that it's very clean and elegant looking. You definitely should not go below a VS2 because you will be able to see the flaws. Don't worry about the proposal and getting the ring. It'll happen when you least expect it!

Re: rings...

Have you been to Tacori or Verragio sites? Their rings are fancy too, so I am not sure you would like them, but we liked the tacoris and that's what we got. We ordered the setting, and it took about 6 weeks to get it, so perhaps that's what route your fi took? So it may be taking a while...

If your hands are small, you may want to try some before having the fi buy it, b/c a whole bunch of settings didn't fit me (particularly verragios) because the ring was too wide b/w the fingers, so my pinky was sticking out --- does that make sense?

PS: here is my ring, except no engraving at the bottom half of the band. I am not getting the matching wedding band, b/c then it looks tooo fancy and would overshadow the diamond... So just a plain band for me with a tiny cut for diamond fit.

http://www.tacori.com/collections/parasol/f.html

The setting itself was $1,600, on the cheap side of tacori but expensive of 'a setting'. Plain settings usually average around $500. My stone is round, so can't help you with price. I can tell you that there were like 3 inclusions, that are all now hidden under prongs.

Mims107, I forgot to mention, that I do like the ring on the picture, not so plain looking. But we may have different tastes...

Re: rings...

I love your ring alina! It is so romantic looking!

The ring i posted was just the first I found that had emerald cut in it to display one. I like that ring, and would not complain if it showed up in a ring box in front of me LOL.... however I think it would be more my style if it was just the center stoneand maybe a baguette on each side, or something a little more simple. I dont wear a lot of jewelry as it is, so flashy is not my style (not that ring is very flash at all).

Funny thing is, my mother said the same thing to her fiance... she asked for simple emerald cut in plantinum setting, no side stones, etc... she got something that would be too flashy for zsa zsa gabore (omg how doyou spell that name LOL) She has grown to like it (not love it though)

I think James knows me much better than that though. I expect him to pick out something fantastic. I do know what you mean about some rings not 'fitting' a hand. I do not have very petite hands. Long fingers, average hands... but I already showed him some no-no's

Re: rings...

I didn't like my fi's taste in Jewelry, so we picked the ring together... He bought me 2 necklaces (just everyday kind), the 2nd for my bday in December of last year. A short while later, as a part of different conversation, I asked him not to buy me any real expensive jewelry without me, which is when it slipped out of him that he was looking at e-rings online :-) I was shocked b/c we only dated for 6 months then, and of course I didn't expect it... Then the mad search for settings started and 2 months later we found what we wanted and 4 months later, on our 1 year anniversary he proposed...

All I can say, is just enjoy the little butterflies in the stomach prior to the engagement, its a nice feeling of expectation!!!

Re: rings...

Thanks alina! I think he and I will do some shopping together (online makes it easy cause we can just browse styles and such). The only jewelry he has bought me in the past was a pair of white gold hoop earrings. They were exactly what I had asked for. Other than that I am not much of a jewerlry person, so its probably a good idea to give him some ideas to work with.

I'd rather wait for a perfect diamond, then get a not so nice one now.
I waited and it was so worth the wait!!
