We're up to my TOP Project. Ripping up the wall-to-wall carpeting we have in the house. I have been DYING for this moment, and we're doing it in the midst of other things going on, because I just simply BEGGED for him to get started on it !
Anyone have tips on doing this? He will have little or no help (he's not one to ask for help, hates to 'bother' people) so he may do most of it alone, and Im sure my BIL and his friends will chip in here and there. But mostly he's diving in headfirst. He did one room (JA's room) months ago, and it turned out great. He took his time and took the little nails out of the floor, one by one...
The big obstacles are going to be: What is the condition of the floors underneath? and now GETTING THE HaRDWOOD floors finished... I feel like we should think this out more before taking this DIVE !
How do you get a floor done with furniture around. Pile it all into one room and move around the house room by room? My bedroom furniture is EXTREMELY heavy!!! Anyone have experience with this?? HELP !

Re: Ripping Up Carpeting ! YAY ! TIPS ????
my fmil just did this right before christmas in her living room and dining room. we just ripped up the carpet around the furniture first, took all the little nails out and then we bought those little white things that lets you slide furnitue under the heavy stuff. we used sand paper on any part of the floor that was messed up and the we polyurethane(sp?) on the floor. it came out beautiful.

You did it yourself ?
Do you see any nicks/scratches from the nails? I still see them in my sons room, but we havent touched up the floors yet. We're waiting to do it all together (All the rooms).
Is there a website that would give details on how to do it ? But Im sure my husband would want something like that done professionally...
Sounds great though, thanks !

FH and I ripped up the carpet in the house we bought a few months ago. It had been there at least 40 years, and the carpet padding under the carpet adhered to the floor, making a huge mess. We have beautiful hardwood floors but it was coated with green goo. We had to scrape the floors with razor blades. We haven't sanded it yet but we will.
I suggest moving all the furniture out, ripping it up, pulling up all the nails, and if the floor needs to be sanded and refinished, do it then, but seal off the room! Boy that can stink!

Re: Ripping Up Carpeting ! YAY ! TIPS ????
We just ripped up the carpeting in our living room, hallway and down the staircase. We moved all of the furniture into our kitchen and other rooms in order to give us room to move around. This made the carpet removal much easier as we did not have to rip up carpet - move furniture - rip up carpet, you get the picture.
The actual carpet removal was not that bad. Our living room is quite large, so we cut that carpet in half using a razor blade. We then removed the padding underneath. There were nails and staples that remined in the floor. We removed those one by one using pliers and a nail remover.
We hired people to refinish the floors. They are actually doing it today and tomorrow. Basically, we figured that the whole process would take quite some time and since we have never done it before, we did not want to screw it up and accidentally sand a hole through to the basement or something
The polyurethane that is used on the floors definitely smells and if you are sanding a large area, there will be dust everywhere!!! I tried to ''seal off' the rooms that were not being used to minimize the clean up.
I'll let you know how the floors turn out. Good luck!

Re: Ripping Up Carpeting ! YAY ! TIPS ????
Colleen thanks for all the details
My husband says that my son and I (hes 7m) should leave the house when its being finished. How long does the smell linger? and when they finish the floors, do THEY move the furniture around from room to room, or are you responsible for that. Im dreading my bedroom because my furniture weighs more than my house!
Thanks again for the feedback everyone! Keep it coming

We finished removing our LR and Hall carpet on Sat. The carpet and padding removal is easy. The nails and stapels are not hard to remove but take time.
Basicly its rip and roll for the carpet. We used duct tape to hold the roll together and then cut the roll up with a sawzall. That made it much easier to get out of the house. Plus the sanitation dept will only take up to 4ft lengths of anything. We just stuffed the padding into heavy construction bags. You have to be really carfull getting all those stapels out especially with the baby around.
Now its on to painting and then we are getting the floors done. We plan to be out the house for a rew days while the floors are being done.

As far as I know, when you have someone come in to refinish, you are responsible for moving the furniture. FBIL just had it done recently and they piled everything into their den. Then they left for a few days while the place was 'smelly'. If you have a 7m old son, I think going to stay w/ your mother is a good idea.

Re: Ripping Up Carpeting ! YAY ! TIPS ????
Hi again Anna!
Since you have a baby (who is just the cutest thing by the way - I love seeing pictures of him on the 'Parenting' board - he always makes me smile ), I definitely think it would be good for you to leave for a few days.
It has been my experience that the smell lingers for on average, about 4 - 5 days (depending on the ventilation in the room it could be more or less). It is pretty strong for about the first 2 -3 days.
We were responsible for moving the furniture out of the rooms, and we will have to move it back in when the floors are finished. Also, we were told not to walk on the floors for at least 1 day after the job is complete.
I'll post some pics when the job is done. I think I may have some 'before ' pics too although not directly of the floor.
Hope this helps!

Colleen, thanks so much ! (and JohnAnthony says thank you )
I'd love to see pics!
I also have to get estimates on the finishing. Is that price dependent upon the condition of the floors (they should be decent, not too bad) or is it just a figure per sq ft and its the same method done to all?

Re: Ripping Up Carpeting ! YAY ! TIPS ????
The price we were quoted was by the square foot. We were quoted 1 dollar per square foot and our floors were in pretty good shape overall.
A friend of mine also recently ripped up her carpet. In her case, the carpets were very old and the padding had become embedded in the wood. In her case, the estimate was much higher because the work was considerably more labor intensive.
S to answer your question (in a long-winded kind of way), I think it has to do with the condition of the floors
