I'm going to the Excellence in Riviera may for our honeymoon in June. I know alot of you are also going there. My soon to be MIL keeps emailing me all these travel warnings about Mexico, with US citizens being kidnapped and stuff. Do you think I should change my honeymooon? I'm getting a little nervous reading all the stuff she's sending me.
Or do you think it's ok as long as we just stay in the resort? The reports are saying it's mostly northern mexico by tijuana. I'm starting to get really nervous though.

I think you are fine on the resort. Crime is a problem on Jamaica and DR as well. You are a tourist, many of the locals are poor, they know on vacation you are going to be more relaxed and they take advantage of this. I think as long as you stay on the resort or do resort sponsored tours, you're fine. That being said, listen to your inner voice. If a situation doesn't feel right, it isn't. Relax and have a great time!!!!!

If you stick to the resort you should be fine, we are doing a cruise on the Mexican Riveria. I had the same worry and we just figured we would stay on the boat and see the sights if we decide we dont feel same once we are there

I went there in September for my Honeymoon, it was absolutely beautiful. Don't change it, you have nothing to worry about. The resort is very safe and if you go on any excursions they are loaded with tourists. I felt completely safe the whole time. Go and have fun.

NW crashing........
My mom said the same thing to me the day I booked the trip. We stayed at the Excellence in riviera maya and you have nothing to worry about. We would store stuff in the safe everyday and if we did leave the hotel would just bring one card and some cash. You'll be fine. The place is gorgeous and the food is amazing. Enjoy!

If you feel that unsafe about it then you should change your reservation, but most of the countries in the carribean have the same issues. FH and I are going to EPM and we're really not worried at all about it. If you are staying in the resort areas then you wil be fine.

FH and I are also going to Riviera Maya the same time you both are...we are not changing it, we are all in a safe resort, plus when you do excursions you will be in groups with other tourists...you don't have anything to worry about.

Re: Riveria Maya Mexico
I think that these travel warnings were more about Mexico City and maybe Cancun specifically. We've been to the area twice in the last year and a half. (We got in engaged in Playa del Carmen!) Of course, you should always be careful when traveling anywhere, but I never once felt unsafe. And we didn't even stay on a resort. Although I understand the security in staying on the resort/boat, I wonder what's the point of traveling all the way to Mexico if you aren't going to explore it a bit? Otherwise, you could be on a boat to nowhere or at a resort in anywhere. That area of Mexico has a lot to offer in terms of cultural/historical sites, beautiful beaches/ocean, and a great nightlife. Don't miss out on it; just be smart like you would if you were in NYC or any other tourist destination.

Re: Riveria Maya Mexico
I have been to Riviera Maya about 4 times, the last trip being January of last year. I have never had a problem and even took a public bus to Playa del carmen to go shopping for the day. I also took this last trip solo. I've also been to Cancun about 3 times and went all over the place. As always in being in another country just be more observant. Enjoy and have an amazing time - it's a beautiful place!

we are going to EPM and plan to take a ruin tour (through the resort company or w/e). I think you will be fine, most of the danger is in Mexico City, Tijuana, and near the border. They are warning to not use ATM's on the street bc people are holding ppl up for their pin numbers. Go inside a bank if you need to take out cash.
Just be careful and aware as always.
