Roman Catholic brides please help

I just read something somewhere and I'm not sure if it's true.
my fh and I didn't want to get married in a church, we were going to either have a friend who is an ordained minister marry it's our an officiant at the hall. if we don't get married in the church will the Cindy still recognize our marriage and let our children get baptized there and make thier communion and confirmation there??? bc we still want that just not keen on getting married in the church! TIA

The church probably won't recognize your marriage but your children can definitely be baptized, receive communion, etc. My parents weren't married when I was born and I was able to receive all my sacraments in my family's church. They did have to take a class (similar to pre-cana) in order for me to get baptized.

really? Damn I didn't think of this! so basically take pre cana now or  later. I guess I should call My church! if it turns out I have to get married in a church I would like to go to the church I was baptized in, my aunt, parents and grandparents were married in bc I just found out the same priest, father Rodriguez, did it all and he is still at that church. he did a special mass for my grandmother that recently passed away. :( I was on my cruise I didn't get to go. but ty for your helpful info

The class that my parents took was not an actually pre-cana. It was similar but not as extensive. It taught them about raising children within the Catholic church. Pre-cana does go over this but has a lot of other components too. I would definitely call your church to see what they would require for your children to get baptized there but you definitely don't have to get married in a church in order them to do so.

Check with YOUR church, not every church goes by the same rules. my ex and I were not married in the catholic church and they would not baptize our son.

My brother and sister in law weren't married in the catholic church bur both of their girls were baptized in the church so I think it depends on the church.

Most Catholic Churches will baptize children. If yours won't, then just find a church that does.

This! Like the other girls said, most churches will baptize your children regardless of whether you got married in a Catholic church or not.

Put simply: no. You would need to have a priest marry you in order for it to be valid in the Catholic Church.

But I'm happy to hear the children can be baptized based on the others responses!

My cousin & her husband were married in city hall and all five of their children were baptized in the Catholic Church.

You can have the marriage convalidated after the fact. I spoke to the priest at my local church and he said that while he cannot tell me to go get married by a judge, once it's done it's done and he can 'fix it up' to to speak.

lol idk how I would feel if a priest said that to me how I would feel!
one partof me takes it as don't worry we can make your marriage recognized in the church dont worry .
on the other hand I hear his disapproval, idk why u would get married by a judge but if u must we can fix it! they can be so judge mental!

I spoke to my BM and GM last night they were married at the court house and thier twins were baptized. I guess if my church didn't allow it there is a way to make them to ' fix it'

We're getting married by a judge because I'm Catholic and FH is Jewish. He understood and did not make me feel bad about it. He said he'd be happy to marry us at the RH, but understood family sensitivities on FH's side. Maybe it didn't come through in my post, but he was very nice about the whole thing.

My fiancée and I were both raised Catholic but we no longer practice it either. However, it is very important for me that our kids are raised Catholic the way that I was (receiving sacraments and making communion/confirmation/religious ed classes). We originally did NOT want to get married in a church and have the reception/ceremony at the same place outside. I was worried that we weren't going to be able to raise our kids Catholic so I spoke with my neighbor who is a deacon at a Catholic church nearby. He said that we don't have to get married in the church, have our wedding the way we want and then he can do a 20 minute informal ceremony inside the church to make it catholic church official anytime after the wedding. He also said that if we don't get married in a catholic church then my fiancee and I can NOT be a godmother or godfather and that was also important to us. We don't belong to the church my neighbor works at but he said that we could still do it there because we're on the location border. Your parish might be determined where you live. I know for us it was like that and we were able to choose from 3 different churches because they're all in the surrounding areas. I know this is a little off topic of what you posted but it might be something else to take into consideration or something you never thought about..

FH and I are obviously not married yet and the church gave us zero probs baptizing our daughter. And a different church gave us no probs signing her up for religion class to make her first communion. We're also not getting married in a church. I think most churches today are more liberal with that sort of thing.

This is an old post, but thank you everyone. Things have changed since this post too. Our hall has a chapel space but it's way to small and being that we ate getting married in the winter we were very limited on another inexpensive space. So we r gong with the church.
