I agree. Queens isn't so much of a whole city as much as it is of lil cities within the borough. I hate having to figure out what area of Queens people live in...why can't I address it as Queens, NY???

omg i fight with FH about this all the time. He lives in Ridgewood Queens and when we're driving around his neighborhood it drives me nuts because one second we'll be in glendale, the next minute we're in middle village and if u turn a block you're in maspeth. sooo confusing! lol

The only people who understand queens are the ones who live in it. It so funny because I think it is so much easier then BK or Bronx because the streets go by numbers.

I dont know why its the only borough with towns!! Things that make you go Hmmm.....

Okay, call me a nerd, but I'll address this question! :) the reason people address the mail as Bayside, Queens or Sunnyside, Queens, etc. as opposed to all the Brooklyn neighborhoods using just 'Brooklyn' and not say, Bay Ridge, NY is because Brooklyn was a city of its own long before it was incorporated into the City of New York (which initially was just Manhattan). The whole place was referred to as Brooklyn y the postal service. Back then, Queens howerver, was like Long Island, little neighborhoods of their own identity. When all of Queens was then annexed to the city and became a borough, people just kept using the town names and zips that they had been using... Hope that makes sense!

OMG! Where did you find that??? You know in the many years that I've asked this, not one person was able to give me an answer. That makes so much sense...but I think we should definitely get a petition going to start addressing it as Queens, NY...

I just can't understand why there needs to be a 69th Street, Road, Avenue, Lane, and such all right by each other!

Now can finally answer that questions.. Thanks!!

I couldnt function if Queens was all one city!! If you live hear long enough the towns are helpful only to the ppl living in queens, but helpful none the less!!!

Totally agree with you on this point.. I think its retarded!!! Especially if the person doesnt specify which one it is or gave it to you wrong and you are driving around in circles.

hee-hee.... I read it in some history of new york book... i had always onwdered about that as no other borough does it like that...

Bronx is Bronx because it's Bronx County and
And NY is NY because it's NY County
BUT
Brooklyn is Brooklyn and NOT Kings because it was called Brooklyn first
and
I don't know why Staten Island is called that by the post office as opposed to Richmond (which is the county name)

yes, I think I know too much useless CRAP... :)

I heard once that it was because when they originallly named the streets, they didn't leave room for expansion, so over the years they inserted more streets to create smaller blocks and had to insert the other names so the numbers would be sequential.

That would explain why a few streets are like two or three blocks long, and just end.
