Room block
I called/emailed 6-7 hotels one day and they all sent me fact sheets about the room blocks. Most were pretty similar, but having the information in front of me definitely helped. We went a few weeks later for tours and to see the hotels. Since we are getting married on a holiday weekend, we wanted to make sure our guests would have a comfortable place to stay.1. Guaranteeing rooms - are you financially responsible if a certain percentage of your rooms aren't booked by the cut off date?
2. Breakfast - is it included for your guests? Is there a restaurant or space to do a private breakfast if you wanted?
3. Bar. If there is a bar, what time does it stay open until on the night of your wedding, can you keep it open later, extra fees for bartenders
4. Bridal/honeymoon suite - Most places comp this for you if you a certain number of rooms are booked (15-20 rooms were the range)
5. Gift bags - One hotel (the one we booked with, go figure) actually charges $2 per bag to give out at check-in. Most did not or didn't specify.
6. Ease of booking - do your guests have to call to make reservation, online options
7. If guests find cheaper rate via AAA/AARP/Military/online hotel sites, can they still be included in your block?
Other things to ask are about renovations - one popular hotel on here is undergoing renovations and they couldn't tell us whether they'd be done or happening by our wedding in Nov. Not a big deal but may be worth knowing ahead of time.
That's all I can think of. I think we probably called too many places!

Very helpful thank you. We will have about 125 guests mostly from Long Island. How many rooms should we block off? Are you obligated to pay for the rooms you don't fulfill?

At fox hollow you are, and the minimum you can book is 10. So if only 3 people book rooms, you are paying out of pocket for the 7.

Use Kleinfeld Hotel Blocks. They do all the legwork for you and send you a spreadsheet with all of the info. Some places will let you block a certain amount of rooms without being liable for the cost of any that aren't booked. If you don't reach the number you've blocked, then all of your guests will pay the regular rate for the room. So I'd just book the minimum. I'm doing this this weekend, lol. I've been working on it with someone from KHB for WEEKS!
