Rose petals - extra $$???

Hi All,

I am working with my florist and trying to finalize plans. My wedding is upstate.

My florist is trying to charge me extra for flower petals around the centerpieces...I feel that I'm already paying a lot for flowers (1300 for 8 low centerpieces of carnations and roses, a few bouts, a few bouquets, 2 corsages, no chapel arrangements....)

I just told the florist to forget the petals -

Is she nickle and diming me? Aren't petals usually free?

Thanks for the reply.

Yup, I asked her to remove the petals.
I don't understand why they are $20 for petals - it isn't the setup, because I'm paying an extra fee for that!

i do believe she's nickle and diming you. my florist offered to do petals for me around my wedding cake, placecard table and cocktail hour for free.

My florist (Pedestals) is throwing in petals and candles around my centerpieces and just about everywhere else for free. I don't think you should be paying for them, but every florist is different.

one place was charging me $50 for a bag to sprinkle the aisle for my ceremony...they said they needed to charge you b/c they are destroying the flowers..

needless to say I didn't go with them...

It really depends on your level of taste with regards to roses. Most people don't know and don't care, but I have a special respect for flowers... I guess ... so don't mind me ... here's my rant.

Roses can be 'cleaned' and they usually are ... improperly and it dehydrates the roses, which is okay for 1 day, but it shortens their life so that they don't open beautifully. I've seen many florist force open the roses by hand and its disgraceful. Sometimes they can be good at it and it looks okay. But I can tell, and I hate that I can tell.

A high quality florist will never 'clean' roses. I taught FH to buy me roses that still have their outer petals. If they still have outer petals and thick stems, they will open fully in 7 days and survive another week.

So if a florist is good quality small scale, they probably don't have left over open roses laying around. If they are your average flower shop, they'll just tear a few outer petals off the roses and never look back. Its not that they don't know any better, they do, they just know that you don't know any better.

Ladies here a few on line places that you can get real rose petals for dirt cheap, well dirt cheap for the amount that you are getting
freshrosepetals.com

sommerflowers.com

freshroses.com

theflowerexchange.com

bridesnblooms.com

fiftyflowers.com

Check them out, they seemed like great prices, I am spending about $4500 on my flowers and i hope she throws them in, if not, i think i could get enough rose petals in various colors, or customized for $50.00, the customized was the $50, they were as cheap as, $20-30 i think, i have been looking at so many numbers. but for the amount i couldnt beat it.

i would tell her to throw them in or else you are going elsewhere-- that is not nice-- you shouldnt have to pay a dime for 'garbage' because she has no use for the petals that they take off the roses and therefore throw them away-- o boy I would be upset--- go yell at her loll

They are trying to nickel and dime you!

My florist didn't charge for them - even didn't charge for the rose petals for the FG basket since we had our own basket.

That definitely makes no sense. But look at it this way at least she didn't tell you she was going to take petals from your centerpiece to throw on the tables. One florist told me that and I was like ok thank you very much for your time.

Im going to do the silk flowers so if your heart is set on having petals definitely use silk.

Thanks for all the replies!

Unfortunately, I have to go with this florist

I'm getting married upstate in a pretty rural area. There are only a few florists, and this one was the best. She works with my venue all the time and was highly recommended.

She removed the petals altogether from the estimate, which is fine. I'm not going to pay extra for petals, I'd rather put that $$ towards more food.

I had petals all over the place, around my CPs, escort table....I was not charge. I think its ridiculous that you are being charged definitely

My florist threw in the candles and petals and the flower girl basket and my garter belt for free. She did other things that were not even discussed previously, like the cake decoration, without charging us extra, too.
