Rotty Owners

How long did it take yours to calm down? My Tonka is a psycho path. She has already been fixed and is a little over a year but sometimes she gets into these moods where she runs around the house like a lunitic. I have 2 other dogs but they cant play together because they are little and she lkes to stomp on them. I take her out in the back yard and play with her when i get home everyday, unless there is rain but when its time to settle down for the night she gets so hyper. Also do you keep your caged when you are not home? I have to keep her caged if I am going to be gone for more than an hour otherwise she trashes the place. Do you think obediance training will help? Sorry this is so long.

Re: Rotty Owners

hooray, another rottie owner on LIW!

My pup is only 7 months old right now, and for the most part, he's pretty well behaved. But DH and I are constantly doing hands on training with him, and he is also in obedience classes as well. We also crate Golem during the day, he goes or a 45 minute walk befor and after work, and is crated at night as well. They really aren't considered adults until 2 years, so your girl is technically still a puppy, with all that puppy energy! Rotts were bred to be working dogs too, and if they don't have something to do - they'll find some other way to occupy that desire to 'work' -- be it ripping apart your couch or running around like a crazydog! Obedience training is definitly something you should do - especially with such a high-energy large breed dog like a Rottie. Maybe she needs more exercise too, the playing every night is good, but she needs to be stimulated in a controlled calm way too - that's why the walks are so important. I can't think of anythign else off the top of my head, but please feel free to FM me! Hope that helped a little bit - I know there's been times with Golem where he gets so crazy/hyper and I just wanted to send him back to his litter!

Re: Rotty Owners

Thanks soo much! I am gonna start taking my lil beast for walks as soon as the weather looks nice. Im also gonna have to look into some obediance training. Do you think it is bad that I do not cage her at night? She sleeps in the bed with me or on teh floor next to my bed. As soon as FH gets up for work though she jumps right into his spot and we sleep until I have to get up. My #1 problem with her is when I let her out in teh morning she knows my schedule and as soon as she sees i am wearing shoes she will not come in. I guess she knows she is going in her 'house' Then I am chasing her around the yard to get her in screamin profanitys all the while!

Re: Rotty Owners

I'm glad I was helpful!
It sounds like your girl thinks she's the alpha - especially if she is sleeping in the same bed as you. It's not necessarily a BAD thing, but it's putting you and her on the same level - which is probably why you end up chasing her when it's time to come inside - she sees you as her equal, another playmate, and is not answering to you as the alpha and is dedicing for herself where to sleep, when to come in, when to play, etc. Crating at night teaches her that you (the alphas) sleep in your own bed, and the crate is her own den - where the non-alpha sleeps. There are SO many awesome books out there that we've read as research before gettin our Rottie - he was our first so we wanted to be prepared! If you don't already have it, Rottweilers for Dummies is by far the BEST book any Rottie owner could read - I highly recommend it! But definitly try to take her on walks more often, it's amazing how much passive energy they'll exert on something as simple as a walk around the block a few times. We pretty much walk Golem in any weather - except for torrential downpour rain! They're tough dogs, they can handle this bad weather we've been having!

Re: Rotty Owners

Thanks so much, Ill have to stop at Borders tonight and pick that book up. I'll try to make her sleep in her house i think it will be harder for me then for her! When FH went on a business trip for a few days I was so lost but she slept with me every night so I felt better with her there as crazy as it sounds. Thank you for all the information, I really appreciate it. I really dont know anyone else who has a rotty so its nice to talk to someone else who has been through it or going through it. SHe is my first rotty as well, Ive always had german sheps and I find they are completely different! My shepards were always trying to please me so to speak where she couldnt give a rats as$ if I like what she is doing or not lol!

Re: Rotty Owners

My Asia is 1 yr old now and she's still very active. What I've found that works best with her is being outside. She loves to run and breathe the air and walk - and usually when she gets back in the house she's ready for a nap. This is the BEST weather for them because Rotties hate the heat. If you have a fenced yard or somewhere you can throw a ball with her you'll find that should get alot of his aggression and energy out - in a good way!

PS - we could make a playdate!

Re: Rotty Owners

oh she would love to play with a new friend! She hasnt seen her 'boyfriend' in a while. LOl that sounds too funny but when I got my Tonk a good freind of mine got a boxer pup and he would leave his dog at my house while he went to work with my bil so they were together all the time. They hadnt played with eachother in awhile and I was driving and saw my friend n his dog in the car so we pulled over the 2 of them were dying to get to eachother! It was so funny. Im definitly going to start walking her I usually refrain from it because i live on a semi busy road but i know when there is a lull in cars so I can do it around that time. Once again Thank you both to the resposes. I know I am saying it a lot but sometimes there is a lack of manners on here and I want to make sure people know that I appreciate the replys!

Re: Rotty Owners

We started seeing Bailey calm down at around 1 1/2 years old and it's been progressive since then. She is now 3 years old and still is very playful at times, but she does curl up on the couch with me when I take a nap or watch tv at night. She also listens to her commands ALOT better now. But don't forget, we are in an apartment, so she doesn't get to run around like she should, which would probably mellow her out more.

We also stopped crating her when we left the apt. after about 2-3 months of being here. She is now trusthworth enough to be left out. We close the bedroom doors and bathroom doors because she'll jump on the bed and mess up the sheets and she eats tissues.

Re: Rotty Owners

So I took my Bella girl (tonka) for a walk last night. Well let me tell you she was in her glory! Funny part is she really has never 'walked' on a leash (unless to go the vet) and she was sooo good. I was pleasantly surprised!

Tonka also eats tissues and now cotton balls. I saw her chasing one the other morning.

We live in Centereach. Where are you an Asia? By the way I LOVE that name. I had a cat named Asia.

Re: Rotty Owners

Glad to hear you girls had a nice walk last night! They absolutely love walks, it's such a sensory experience for them! After you got home from your walk, did you notice that she was a little more mellow? Golem curls up on the floor at my feet and falls asleep when we get home from our nightly walk - tuckers the little guy right out!

Funny, I just talked to Craig a few minutes ago and he said Goelm was trying to eat the dust that was floating in the sunlight from the living room windows! They'll eat anything - part goat, I swear!!!

Re: Rotty Owners

Yup, as soon as we got in I gave her a biscuit and she ran right down stairs onto her bed. (not mine!) and fell asleep. She got up at about 2 and was poking me with her nose to move over and she jumped right into my bed and was snoring like crazy! She is so loud when she sleeps! One thing I have noticed is she has more 'dreams' while she sleeps that any other dog I have ever owned. She is always moving, like shaking almost and barking sometimes growls or wimpers too.

Re: Rotty Owners

Jenn - FM! PS - Asia eats tissues, paper towels and napkins like they're caviar! What is it with paper???
bluegrl24ny Posted:

Re: Rotty Owners

I don't get it either - I thought it might just be a puppy thing since Golem is obsessed with licking the mail as I'm going through it - eating paper towels, napkins, newspaper, pretty much anything PAPER!! Maybe it[s just an acquired taste?

Re: Rotty Owners

Helena! An aquired taste! You know - Asia will grab a paper towel out of the garbage after I clean the windows!! I guess the windex is like dressing!

Re: Rotty Owners

I have a rottie as well, hes going to be 2 in May, well when I read your post about running around like a nutcase inm the house I thought you were talking about my guy (Titan) he drives me crazy when I do that, we try to get him up to the doggie park @ Condre hall on the weekends, but now that the weather is nice and lighter longer we can go after work, helps that I live right near there. anyway, I dont think my pup will ever calm down, he has had training, whichI want to take him abck to it was out in ronkonkoma, it was not your basic training, they train only german sheep's & rotties, somce other big dogs as well, it was alot of off leash training & thingsa like that, o and by the way my dog will eat anything, the other day (and this was a first) I caught him eating his poop, eeewwww i was so grosssed out, hense why I dont let him lick my face LOL

Re: Rotty Owners

Oh my dog eat feces as well. I scream at her all the time for it. I have a really gross story. When my bil lived with us he has a german shep who is 6 years older than my dog so Middy (the shepard) taught my dog all of these bad habits, how to open doors and what not so they are outside one day and I am watching through the window, well Mid starts to go the bathroom and Tonka statched it up before it even hit the ground! I was so grossed out I wouldnt let her back inside for a while! She is just gross! I tell her all the time to be a lady, doesnt work! Also I have a cat and she opens the door (thanks to Mid) to the room where I keep the litterbox and eats our of it! I have tried everything to get her to stop but it doesnt help!
