round 2: dad 'has to think about walking me down the aisle'

soooo last week i wrote a post about how when i told my dad i wanted both him and my mom to walk me down the aisle he said 'he had to think about it.'

well I just got this email from him:

Britt:

I talked to a lot of friends and co-workers and no one I talked to has ever seen or heard of the mother walking the bride down the isle. Is this something that you are set on?

Love ya.

Dad

here's the response i wrote up:

Dad:

I’m pretty upset that you have to think into this so much. It’s not like I’m saying I don’t want you to walk me down the aisle – I do want you to, and you still are. It would just mean a lot to me to have both of my parents walk me down the aisle on my wedding day. You are both very special and important to me so I would like to have you both there beside me.

It really upset me when you said you “had to think about” because it made me feel that you would actually rather not walk me down the aisle on my wedding day than walk me down with Mom. I don’t know whether the real issue is that you aren’t really keen on the idea or whether Jo doesn’t like it or something, but it’s something that I want so I think you should seriously consider what it would mean to me, not what anyone else thinks. This is my wedding day and I think we can all put the past relationships, fights, rudeness, and whatever else to the side for at least one day. There are two sides to my family and I would like to be able to celebrate with everyone without having to worry about who is going to get along with who on my day. It’s about me and Dave – no one and nothing else.

It’s not an old tradition, which is probably why your friends and co-workers haven’t heard of it, but it’s becoming more and more common and will probably be the new tradition soon. Here are some pics to show you that I’m not the first one to want to do it this way:

Love,

Britt

PLEASE READ AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!

I think that was a great letter and it would have drove me crazy the fact that he had to ask other people. Who cares what his friends and co-workers think!

It's true that most people just have their dads walk them down the aisle -- but what about girls who don't have a dad?

No grandpa?

And tradition schmadition. This is 2010, pops.

We do what we want. There isn't anything you 'can't' do.

I think you said everything perfectly, without insults or anger. He should definitely understand your point of view and I have been to plenty of weddings where the MOB and FOB walk the bride down!

sounds good to me ... i like that it hints about the fact that if he doesn't accept to walk with your mom, that he won't get to walk with you at all

In Jewish weddings its actually tradition for both parents to walk the bride AND groom down the aisle- and lots of people pick and choose from different traditions for their wedding. I think its amazing to honor both parents that way.

I think your letter was PERFECT, spot-on, respectful yet gets the point across. Well done and I hope he responds well!

You're a lot more reasonable in your letter than I would've been! I think it's perfect. If that doesn't get him on board, nothing will!
