round 2: dad 'has to think about walking me down the aisle'

Original post by brittndave

soooo last week i wrote a post about how when i told my dad i wanted both him and my mom to walk me down the aisle he said 'he had to think about it.'

well I just got this email from him:

Britt:

I talked to a lot of friends and co-workers and no one I talked to has ever seen or heard of the mother walking the bride down the isle. Is this something that you are set on?

Love ya.

Dad

here's the response i wrote up:

Dad:

I’m pretty upset that you have to think into this so much. It’s not like I’m saying I don’t want you to walk me down the aisle – I do want you to, and you still are. It would just mean a lot to me to have both of my parents walk me down the aisle on my wedding day. You are both very special and important to me so I would like to have you both there beside me.

It really upset me when you said you “had to think about” because it made me feel that you would actually rather not walk me down the aisle on my wedding day than walk me down with Mom. I don’t know whether the real issue is that you aren’t really keen on the idea or whether Jo doesn’t like it or something, but it’s something that I want so I think you should seriously consider what it would mean to me, not what anyone else thinks. This is my wedding day and I think we can all put the past relationships, fights, rudeness, and whatever else to the side for at least one day. There are two sides to my family and I would like to be able to celebrate with everyone without having to worry about who is going to get along with who on my day. It’s about me and Dave – no one and nothing else.

It’s not an old tradition, which is probably why your friends and co-workers haven’t heard of it, but it’s becoming more and more common and will probably be the new tradition soon. Here are some pics to show you that I’m not the first one to want to do it this way:

Love,

Britt

PLEASE READ AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK!

In Jewish tradition it is custom for both parents to walk down the aisle (for the bride and groom). My mom is Jewish and my dad is Catholic. My dad NEVER heard of this tradition. We're having a none religious ceremony and when my mom mentioned it I thought my dad was going to fall off his chair. I actually came up with a compromise for my parents so my mom could have her thing (she feels left out because a lot of the wedding day is about daughter and father and not daughter and mother (besides the bride and groom of course). My mom is going to have the first aisle seat towards the back of the room. She will be the FIRST person I see and she'll get to see me and my dad walk in (my dad and I are SUPER close so we both really wanted to walk in just us). then when we get to the beginning of the where the seats start (where my mom will be) She will join us and continue to walk down with us. She will then step aside and my dad requested a blusher so that he feels like he has something to do. My dad will remove the blusher (it's detachable) and be on his way. This way my mom is honored and my dad still gets to do his thing.
