Anyone know of someone with kittens looking for a home, or know of someone with a pregnant cat? My FH LOVES cats and we have decided to adopt one, however, we want kittens from a house cat, not from a shelter (unless someone I know worked there).
TIA!! FM please!

I understand you said you that you wouldn't want to adopt from a shelter. May I ask why? There are so many cats there that need homes and if they are not rescued or adopted they will be put to death.
I adopted 2 of my cats from Wantagh Shelter and Town Of Babylon shelter in W. Babylon when they were kittens and they are fine.

I'm totally down for giving them homes, but FH had a few bad experiences with adopting from shelters, the cats/kittens were very mean and unfriendly. I am sure that is not the case all the time, but you know once you have a bad experience, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Re: RP from '08 - Kittens
my kitten was actually adopted from a Butcher Shop in Brooklyn she is the SWEETEST most affectionate baby in the world ...
we got her at 7 weeks, i think if you get them early enough, it doesnt matter where they come from! Still, sometimes even the most neglected, poorly cared for ones are the sweetest - all they want is a warm home, food, and a friend to play with/pet them
ETS ::
ok i need to revisit this post ... she was not there to be BUTCHERED there was a cat that lived in the meat shop and that cat had babies and Layla was born there
and the owners were muslim so we say layla is muslim ... she sits in the corners and looks at the wall sometimes, we say she is praying towards mecca!!
valley stream cat rescue!!!! we just adopted two kittens and they are the sweetest things! the woman who runs this non-profit is a no-nonsense woman who takes amazing care of all the kittens in her care. dont turn away from shelter cats! they need the most help!

I know a girl who works with shelters as well as the ASPCA and helps kitties get good homes. I call her the cat woman lol
If you like FM me and I will get you in contact with her.

Re: RP from '08 - Kittens
why not at least adopt from a no-kill rescue if you're uncomfortable with a shelter? They tend to be more one-on-one with their animals and know their personalities better than the larger shelters - I highly recommend contacting Last Hope animal shelter - they have several locations across Long Island, are extremely responsible with their animals, and every person I've had contact with there has been wonderful.
also, I still don't get why not a shelter... I mean, as long as you spend time with the animal before you take him/her home, you can get a feeling for their personality and know that you're not getting one with a nasty temper or something...

I agree....you should adopt a kitten from a shelter. I adopted a kitten from North Shore Animal and had that kitten until he was 14 years old and died. He was very loving and not mean. He would greet me at the door when I got home from work just like a dog would do and if I didn't stop to give him a kiss he would be upset. It is how you treat them and teach them....not where you adopt them from. Give a shelter kitten a chance.

Well to be completely honest with you, we acquired another kitten in the past 9 months. FH found him when he was 2 months old in Brooklyn on a really cold day and to be honest with you, he is the worst cat I've ever owned as a kitten. I've had 5 kittens in the past. He doesn't listen to anything at all and harasses my other cats like crazy.
Otis & Pebbles, my older cats, which were both adopted from shelters are the much better than our kitten Fred. I always say I think Fred has an extra chromosome b/c he is just so crazy.
Although Fred has made a bad impression and is driving us crazy doesn't make me think for one second that I would not adopt another kitten off the streets.
I think you should give the shelter another chance or Last Hope as someone else has said in a reply to your post. I've also been to Petsmart and seen tons of kittens in there. I am sure most of those kittens start out in the same place as a shelter kitty has.
I am all about rescuing animals who are going to be put to death if they are not wanted. I'd hate to take an animal in or even pay for an animal when I know there are so many lonely animals sitting in shelters waiting for their time to be up.
Maybe you can make your FH realize that just b/c the cat was from a shelter is not the reason why it was a bad kitty.
Good luck.

Thank you for the post and I agree. i am willing to go through a shelter, but I just want to know someone there. Turns out, I got a lot of FM of people whose mother/sister/friend work in shelters on LI and I think we are working something out. Fh adopted two animals from a shelter and they never told him that the dog had a disability which passed away long before he should have and FH was crushed. He is just cautious now. I guess I didn't come off the right way in my original post.
Anyway, it's awesome the passion you have for animals.

Re: RP from '08 - Kittens
try your local vet. My vet (westbury animal hospital) always has kittens and cats for adoption. I got my cat from there as an adult 10 years ago and I love him to death!
