First off - I NEVER get tires from a dealer OR a mechanic. Always use Sears on sale, or try All Weather Tires on Depot Road in Huntington (you can call them and give them the size of the tire and they'll give you a price over the phone.
Second - belts and transmission are not needed for the car to pass inspection. They have a machine that will shut off the check engine light and you can drive the car for @ 1/2 hour and then it will go on the machine with the light off and a history to pass inspection (although the tranny work should get done or the car is just going to crap out and be useless). DH might be able to do the belts. I have a Nissan and there is one belt I can't get to myself.
Third - front end work. Did they explain what that means??? It could be something like shocks (that you can get on the cheap on sale at Sears installed) or something expensive like tie rod ends. Again, tie rods needed for inspection, shocks nope.
Fourth - bulbs can be done by DH. There is an auto parts store on Larkfield Road in East Northport (Roadside Auto Parts) that sells things at prices normal people can afford. There is another good auto parts store on New York Avenue in Huntington right before the NY Ave 110 merge just north of Jericho Tpke (the name is escaping me at the moment) - also inexpensive.
All in all, you should be able to get this taken care of for about $1K. Good luck Liza!!!
And you can call the mechanic I gave you & he'll give you a ballpark figure over the phone.

Re: RP from LIF - serious car problems
When my car was under warranty that was the only way I took my car to the dealer. The dealer rip you off for parts and labor I take my car to a regular mechanic who does use Infinity car parts on my car and does not charge no where near an astronomical price, Don't let the dealer take advantage of you not all mechanics use cheap parts.
A wheel alignment is $40
I have a sports car and have low profile tires (19in tires) and paid like about what that guy is quoting you which is crazy for the type of car you have.
