DH's family is from Italy and he also speaks Italian. We are trying to plan a trip to Italy this spring to visit his family. I really wanted to learn Italian because I want him to teach our kids it when they are young and now that we are going there I think now is a great time to start. The problem is I dont know how to learn. I looked up this one program and it is a couple of hundred dollars which I cannot afford right now. Also, I want to learn on my own and not DH or his family because I need to learn how to write the words and the correct grammar.
ANy ideas?

Re: RP from NW: How to Learn a Language
We went on our honeymoon in France so we went to the library and rented some cds. We loaded them onto the computer and he put it on my ipod. I took French in high school but it taught me enough to get around. The brand we used is Pimsleur and we just looked it up on the library database. Good luck!

I really heard that Rosetta works, I am thinking of taking some cd's out of the library to learn Chinese. My landlord is chinese we have tons of Chinese students at my college and if I go to the city for work eventually it might help me since China is really becoming a major economic powerhouse country.
plus i plan to visit china one day.

Livemocha.com is a free language site where you can take lessons. It's also a social site where you can chat with and get help from people who are native speakers of the language you are studying.

you should check out the library's website. Especially if you live in Suffolk. They offer Mango language courses which are basically free, online language classes.
Kim what about taking an adult ed. class in italian. Don't know if you have the time but they offer them through the nassau thing. I forget what it is called.

can you take some college classes? I know queens college allows auditors into the classrooms, I think they pay like $50 for the whole semester, you basically can go to class and listen, you can do the work given but you dotn receive credit or a grade. I know many older people used to sit in my Italian classes at Queens College just to learn the language.
ETA: I know Rosetta Stone is expensive but I hear its the best way to learn on your own. Maybe try ebay if they have it for less.
