Im going to be taking a cruise this summer for the first time, either to the Carribean or to Europe. I was told that I dont have to get on a plane and fly to somewhere else to get on the boat and that the boat leaves out of the NY harbor, is this true?
Has anyone taken a cruise that left from the NY harbor?
Are cruises scary? Is there alot of motion? Im sure there is a ton of things to do on it to pass the time...TIA

Yes, you can sail from New York - no need to get on a plane.
I've been on 6 - going on 7th this August.
I get motion sea sickness on small boats - never sea sick on a cruise ship.
My vacation of choice

Some cruises leave out of NY... the majority go to Canada, Bermuda, and some to Caribbean if they are at least a week long cruise... Im not sure what Europe ones are out there... I havent looked into those
Some people dont like being in the middle of the ocean without land in sight... this concept freaks some out... also if you get seasick, it could become unenjoyable... bigger ships dont have the motion you'd expect from smaller ships... if anything, it is a very slow, gradual side-to side movement.... crossing the atlantic gets a bit rocky so you might want to avoid that as your first cruise (aka europe, bermuda)

norwegian cruise line leaves out of the west side of manhattan. it goes to new england, bahamas and carribean. it also goes to europe. u can either get on the boat in ny and fly back from spain.. or u can fly TO spain and come back to ny by boat.

I've been told you should get a room toward the center of the ship -- you feel the movement more on the ends of the ship.

I've been on cruises before and really enjoy them. So the lower the room, the less motion. In terms of 5 vs 9. But too low... like 2 is not very good. My suggestion would be to try to book a room in the front to middle of the boat, not the back... less motion.
No matter the size, you can hit rough waters around Bermuda or Cuba. I sailed on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of The Seas (like a floating city) and we hit 20 ft waves.. so we felt it, and I don't get sea sick. But it wasn't soo bad. They have free patches for motion sickness in the infirmaries on ships. It doesn't last long, so don't fret. Some people don't seem to notice. The cruise experience is really great.
As for ports... they leave out of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Bayonne, NJ, so you can easily drive to any of them. It may take an extra day or two at sea to get around the Bahamas tho.

We took Norwegian out of NY to Fla and the Bahamas. Try to get a room in the middle/lower part, least motion.
It was awesome! Most of the time we didn't even feel like we were on a boat, except crossing from Fl to the Bahamas was SOOO rocky, they said they always got rough waters in that area. FH was like crazy Lietenant Dan in Forrest Gump out on the bow as water is coming up over the sides while everyone else was puking lol, I was SOOOOO sick that night. HOWEVER, I didnt realize they gave out free dramamine (sp?) right at the front desk! I had this other anti-nausea stuff that didn't work, if only I had known that. I took some the next night and I was completely fine.
Take some of the meds and you should be fine! That stuff really worked wonders!
Best vacation we were ever on! And comparatively, soooo cheap. We had the best time, yes even the night I was sick haha was totally worth it! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

I took a cruise out of NY, it left from Red hook brooklyn. It was the crown princess and its destinations are: Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, Bermuda and St. THomas. I LOVED not having to pay extra to take a plane to get to the cruise, and i live in queens so took 15 mins to get there, it was perfect.
Buy the wristbands for motion sickness, they are awesome. I always get seasick but i wore those on the cruise and had no problems.

I have been on 3 cruises all out of NY!!..I had NEVER been on a plane b4 & my ex bf wasnt to crazy about flying either. I took the bermuda cruise with norwegian, eastern carribean with carnival & western carribean with princess...ALL 3 were AMAZING! but I think we agreed the Princess one was the best all round plus we had a brand new ship at the time! I hate motion..planes now that I have actually been on one, rides etc. I did ok on the cruises..if I can do it ANYONE can. I am 26 years old & cry on rides & planes ok??!! haha,..check to see if it is hurricane season when you are booking . because you are not flying, you will spend a few more days at sea but its so awesome on there you won't even care!.. but we did go right in the middle of hurricane season EVERYTIME! because it was cheaper & we were fine! DEF a room in the middle of the ship..I mean top to bottom and across..smack in the middle is your best bet not to feel anything..if do do its not bad though..that ship is so big. & get a balcony for the extra $ if you can because the 1st one i went on we had a small window but I felt a lil claustrophobic..but that was just me..it was nice to be alone but also go outside if I want to 'get out!' haha I really love cruises I think they are the BEST! hope I helped you & good luck!!

NO there not scary and yes they do leave out of NY Harbor depending on the cruise line and date etc. If you get motion sickness (like me) be sure to take dramamin 2 days prior to your departure.
