i'm invited to a shower and wedding in april and may, respectively, for a 'friend' who knows that we're buying a house.
she and her fh were broke for my wedding, by the way.
what kind of gift? how much? would you feel comfortable showing up with??
oh, for the record, when i wrote BROKE in the post subject, i meant 'i ain't got NO money!'

I would probably get something small from her Gift Registry. I dont like going empty handed as for the wedding gift I still would give her something small what ever you can afford.

Her and her FH were broke for your wedding, does that mean they gave nothing?? If they gave you a little something then I would try to match that. If they gave you nothing, then give them a $25 GC for the shower and $50-$75 for the wedding.
I know you're supposed to match the plate, but obviously they didn't so I wouldn't go crazy being the bigger person.

I would give her the same- a $20.00 registry gift- you can always go to where she is registered and use a coupon-so that $20.00 gift might wind up costing less... and if they gave $50.00 for the wedding, you give $50.00 for the wedding, seems like you guys are in the same situation and no one should be offended by it!

for the shower i would buy a gift off of the registry that is in your budget. you could also make up a basket that looks like it cost alot but really doesnt for example: a baking basket (a few pans, cake/brownie mix, spatulas and othe rutensils - sometimes you can get those at the dollar store) cake decoratiing tools, etc. spice basket (a spice rack maybe and a variety of different spices, olive oil things like that to stock the cuppard) cleaning supplies (paper towels, kitchen towels, sponges, laundry basket, etc) bathroom (like towels, soaps, little decorations)

for the wedding - i would say give what you can afford - they know your situation so they shoudl understand!

Here's an idea... there is a woman in East Islip who will frame the invitation with some dry wild flowers, it makes a great gift, I've given it several times at a shower. It really comes out beautifully. If you want, I can get the woman's contact info to you tonight... I believe it's about $75... you can also split the shower gift with someone... if you know someone who will be at the shower, go in on a gift together, that will cut down the cost. If you do that, I would do the framed invitation as the actual wedding gift... who said you HAVE to give money. They'll have this gift forever and will really cherish it.

I would match what she gave you. Only fair...if it was a while ago, maybe a little more to factor in inflation :)
