Rules of Commuting

Original post by MonkeyLuv

This is inspired by the train etiquette post, and by yet another encounter with a presumptuous asshat on my way to work this morning (who I quickly yelled at).

By Car:
1. Don't pace people. Unless you enjoy hearing me drop the C word at the top of my lungs as I finally pass you.

2. Pay attention! Those traffic lights? They dictate traffic patterns, so follow them! At red, stop. At green, go. Don't wait for a full 30 seconds to go at a green light. People will kill you.

3. While getting coffee, keep your trap shut. No one wants to chit-chat with a stranger at 8am. Get your coffee, have your money ready and get the hell out of the way.

4. After getting your coffee, don't sit in your car in the parking lot for an extended period of time. You're taking up a spot for no reason. And, if your window is rolled down, do not greet people as they walk past your big-@ss, space-wasting car. Go to work, already!

5. Most importanly, do not under any circumstance buy lottery tickets, quick-picks, etc on the way to work. You're holding up the line. People have more important things to do than watch you hog the counter to play scratch-offs or buy 30 lottery tickets with your special formula of lucky numbers.

By Train

1. In the morning, keep your yap shut. No one wants to make friends that early.

2. Again, no leaning on the posts.

3. Your feet don't need a seat of their own. Neither does your bagel, your bag, your umbrella, or your hat. Pick your stupid stuff up and hold onto it like a normal person, you animal!

4. If you push someone, expect to be pushed back.

5. When exiting the the train/subway, keep moving. Don't mosey around in little stops and starts. You'll get trampled and no one will care.

6. When you're on a bus or train or subway and you see someone who is older, looks sick or tired, carrying many packages or just looks like they could use the rest, offer your seat, regardless of your gender! Not because it's chivalrous, because it's polite you @ss!

I encountered 2 of them this morning! The lotto and the park-n-greet!

I pulled into a spot and the car to the left of me had 2 middle-aged guys in it. The window was rolled down and as I got out of my car they both said, 'Hello, good morning.' I just ignored them and walked into 7-11. Had to wait for LOTTO guy to buy 5 tickets. When I walked back to my car, the guy in the passenger seat said to me, 'I said good morning to you...'
I was instantly pissed off! So I turned to him and said 'Yeah, I ignored you, jack@ss. Now shut the hell up and go to work!'

It's always middle-aged men who pull that creepy, hitting-on-you-and-scolding-you-at-the-same-time crap. I am so tired of the presumption!!!

It's not like they said 'sweetie' or 'honey' sometimes people are just being nice...Geez!

People frequently offer me a seat. I wonder if I fall into any of those categories?

They do? Tourist , we basically take the same train and I've NEVER been offered a seat .. I'm not sure if that is good for me, good for you .. or what

I know , its weird. I usuall thinkit means I look pregnant Sometimes it happens on the shuttle or the 1/9 but usually the Metro North.

Last week, I as standing & looking around, just being nosy, mostly, I guess someone guy thought I was lookinf for a seat & said there's a seat over there--and point to the seat in the group seat that no one can use b/c everyone's legs are in the way.
umm, thanks, but no thanks.

There is a pregnant women on my train & usually people give her as seat, but they don't get up, usually they just move ther stuff of that hard to get to corner seat.

Oh stop you do not look pregnant!

And maybe I'll say differently when the day comes I'm preggo, but I much rather stand than squeeze myself into those group seats, the train ride isn't too long that I sometimes don't mind standing

Besides I hate making any body contact with anyone, and if my knees knock into others in those group seats, not to mention generally sitting face to face with people just buggs me (yes I have issues)

Then again I dread the day I am preggo and still doing this commute .. I totally cannot see it

yes, sometimes people are just being nice, these guys weren't. Also, I don't need snide and smarmy etiquette lessons from some idiot in a parking lot at 8am.

I agree- the hello was not so offensive, but the follow up was just un-called for.

That part didn't bother me, I wasn't even sure it was directed at me. But the follow-up!! That's what got me.

ETA on the 'Sweetie' and 'Honey' tip. I hate when strangers call me that! It's so dimissive and obnoxious. Pretty much, only my close friends and FH can call me that!

No, these are they types of guys who will just say 'Good Morning' to a pretty girl to get a rise out of her. I'm sure it's happened to you before.

What I don't get is what they hope to accomplish by saying Good Morning to you? did they think you were gonna blow off work, hop in their car, ride up and down the LIE all day, tell them all your hopes, dreams and fears and then finish off the day with sexual favors for both???

I hate the people that wait until the very last second to step off the escalator, and then once they get off they stand there deciding which way to go. Meanwhile, the dumbass doesn't realize that there are about 50 people behind them, about to pile up on them!

Or, DH's favorite - we have to drive through a toll booth every morning, and we have an EZ Pass, so we head right for the EZ Pass lane. Well, it never fails - someone ALWAYS gets in the EZ Pass lane when they don't HAVE an EZ Pass! Sometimes they'll come to a complete stop IN THE LANE when there are people driving up behind them doing 60 mph (there's no gate at the toll booth so everyone whizzes right through).
OR, they don't realize at all that they got in the EZ Pass lane and they'll sit there in the tooth booth trying to figure out where to put their money

Farah, the hopes and dreams and sexual favors things made me PIMP!

Ann... WORD! I hear that from Mr Boots all the time! He goes into NYC a lot for work and gets stuck behind those everytime!!

OMG, Farah, you know what I do in stores? This kills Mr Boots!

If I'm trying to get by and someone or a group is just standing there, blocking the walkway, I stamp my heels really sharply and click my teeth! Like horsebackriding! It's like people need that reminder or prod to keep them moving!

I got it from my sister and her many years of dealing with tourists on the streets of NY!

LIZ!!! LMAO! That technique is hysterical, can I ask your permission to use it next time I'm at BJ's? Craig can't stand me in crowded stores, etc. either bc I have ADD and the patience of a gnat - especially with stupid cows who just stand around yammering in the middle of the aisle when I'm trying to buy food!! Are you so retarted that you don't realize your cart is blocking the entire aisle - prohibiting me from getting to the Dairy freezer to pick up my beloved tub of Feta Cheese?!?!? UGH - we should form a club and rise up against these inconsiderate dolts!

DH and I go thru something similar everytime we drive into Staten Island from the Outerbridge.. on the far left of the toll boths are 25 mph EZ pass lanes. Some idiot always gets in front of us (at least they have EZ Pass) but they STOP instead of driving thru. I think they are waiting for some notification of payment.... can't you read - you pass at least 3 signs that say DO NOT STOP.

Re: Rules of Commuting

I would like to add a couple of things.

1. If for some reason you happen to have a folding chair on the subway DO NOT sit in it and proceed to position it right in front of the doors to the train so that no one can get past you while you sit obliviously reading you stupid book!!!!!.

2. Please if you need to do some grooming, let's say clipping your toe nails, do it in the privacy of your own home. I don't need your nasty a$$ nails flying and landing in my lap.

3. If you are a young person who gets on the trains and does the breakdancing show please don't ask me to move when the train is crowded and there is no place to go. Also, when I refuse to move don't use the 'Well, how else am I suppose to make money. At least I'm not out stealing.' line. It has no effect on my hardend heart.
