Re: Rumor? LIRR to have only 2 tunnels open to Penn during convention
LIRR plans normal schedule, but advises commuters to consider alternatives
July 20, 2004, 12:11 PM EDT
NEW YORK (AP) _ The Long Island Rail Road plans to run normal service during the security-heavy Republican National Convention next month, but is also advising commuters to consider travel alternatives.
LIRR service goes into Penn Station, right next to Madison Square Garden, where the convention is being held in the last week of August. A number of streets around Penn Station will be closed during the convention, and four of the six Penn Station exits will be closed for periods of the day.
The railroad advised commuters to think of other ways to get where they needed to be, perhaps by taking trains to LIRR stops in Queens and Brooklyn and transferring to city subways there. Commuters were also advised to leave large bags at home and to buy tickets in advance.

Definatley a rumor. As of now the only things being closed will be a few exits out of Penn Station. They will randomly be searching trains though so expect delays.
I am telling our staff to think about traveling through Flatbush or Hunterspoint instead of Penn Station.
