Hm…..bookclub dilemma.

I didn’t read it. Didn’t’ vote for it either but that shouldn’t’ matter. I failed my storyboard peeps!

I did read Bel Canto, The History of Bees and A Prayer for Owen Meany again?!? Does that count for anything!!!???? J

Well anyway – maybe we need a little more time on this one? Maybe we should vot e for something new? I don’t want Storyboard to die!!!! How can we revive it!??!!?

Re: Sad

I didn't vote for the book, and I never got around to getting it. However, I do not want this board to go by the wayside. We need to get it together this week.

I propose the following changes:
-that the names of the voters be displayed somehow.
-one must read at least one book and participate in a discussion before being able to vote and suggest a book.

Let me know what you think.

I agree changes need to be made. I'd be sad not to have the bookclub anymore. So many people seemed interested in the beginning.

I didn't participate in the first selections, but I did get Bell Jar. I'm still not finished with it though, because last week I realized that I could take my time, since it didn't look like the discussion was going to take place.

Maybe right after the book is decided upon by popular vote, we can start a list of who has the book and who is definitely going to read it?

Re: Sad

I voted but didn't read it. We should definetly choose a new book for the next month.

Re: Sad

Now that I'm married (yay!), I have time for the book club. I had read The Lovely Bones and that was it.

A suggestion for anyone, I just finished the Corrections and it was very good.

Re: Sad

I get a big fat F, as well. I did not vote for Bell Jar, and despite the best of intentions to get a copy and read it, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I agree with Natasha that it seems like many more people voted than are involved in the book club.

I can't think of any other way to make sure that only bookclub ladies are voting, unless one person is in charge of receiving email votes. I personally don't care about voting anonymously anyway.

Any other suggestions?

Oh, I just thought of somehting else. We can just make a list of the bookclub members and rather than voting, we can rotate and each month a different member selects the book.

Becky THAT is a good idea! This way everybody gets a chance to pick at some point, and we'll know who's who!

Let's start a list......of people who want in!

I flunked too ... I did vote for it, but just never got the opportunity to read it.

Stef ... I just finished reading 'In her shoes' - the sequel to Good in Bed, even though I haven't read that one yet - I switch the order around!

I suggested the book & I read it- keep checking back for the discussion but I forgot which day it was supposed to take place...

Re: Sad

Another thought -- how about instead of voting for just your favorite book, you vote for anything you would read. It seems like this months results might have differed if people could have voted for multiple books. (In this case the people who didn't vote for Bell Jar didn't want to read it if it won, and most likely would have been willing to read multiple books that didn't win.)

Cira: How was the sequel?

Re: Sad

Valenia, I like your idea.

Stef, how difficult is it to set up a poll with more than one choice?

This way we can vote for the books we're willing to read instead of the 'most wanted book' and the book that most people want to read should be read?

Re: Sad

I think (not sure) i can set up a poll where you can have multiple answers but I dont think that solves the problem. In this case there were 17 people who voted for Bell Jar and virtually no readers. Wouldnt those same 17 people voted for Bell Jar and it would have won?

Re: Sad

I agree with you Stef that multiple votes will not solve the problem. I don't think we have ever had 17 people read the book and be involved in the discussion. Obviously, people who are not regular members (people who read and discuss the books) voted. I don't think that is fair to the members who really participate in this process.

Re: Sad

Sonicstef - Yes, 17 would have still voted for the Bell Jar, but its possible 20 would have voted for The Red Tent or whatever else. I think this is a case where a number of us (including me) would have read 3 of the 5 books on the list, but the one that won was not one of them.

Another comment on the volume of votes -- is possible that a number of shy lurkers voted, read, and were looking forward to hearing but not participating in discussion.

Personally, I don't think the votes should be anonymous. I have no problem being the one to count them in a thread if we need a volunteer. (I would just ask that the vote thread not become a conversation thread!) I also would be happy to make a list of all of the names of people who participated in either one or both of the prior discussions -- and only those people would be eligible to vote this time around. New people would be added to the list based on participation in the next one. Hows that sound?
