Sad about reception sites

Sad about reception sites

Edited to add a few places I forgot to mention in my list -

I spent the last 2 weekends searching all through Nassau and Suffolk for a wedding place for 100 people for under $100, preferable on the water with greenery. Am I kidding myself? I know there is a lot out there but I have been a Nassu resident my whole life and been to 5 proms and 3 weddings so those places are out (Westbury Manor, Woodbury CC, Fox Hollow, Crest Hollow, Swan Club, Riviera, John Anthony's). I would love something cozy, quaint and charming over your traditional ballroom. I dragged my sister out for 10 hours straight on Saturday in the torrential downpour to 7 places plus what we saw last week. My FH is no help and just wants me to 'book it' whenever I mention a place b/c he doesn't want me to stress out. Too late! 'Psycho Central' has become his new nickname for me. Help! Also, I can't go too far east b/c his side is coming from Jersey and even PA! Girls, I really need some help.

Okay, so to recap, here is where I have been so far:

1. THATCHED COTTAGE (liked)
2. SAN SOUCI (liked)
3. G.W. MANOR (didn't)
4. CRESCENT CLUB (if we were rich)
5. TIMBER POINT (so-so)
6. VANDERBILT MANSION (liked - pushing the budget)
7. CAPTAIN'S BILL'S Bayview House (liked but too big - i would need to buy plants to fill the space)
8. PORT JEFF CC (liked - nervous about catering lease - even if I booked this year, will they do a shotty job knowing they won't be around after to hear me cry?)
9. DANFORD'S (too small - even for me!)
10. OLD FIELD CLUB (really liked but over my budget and only butler style cocktail hour!)
11. MILLERIDGE - they won't give me the big room.
12. CHATEAU LA MER - liked but it gave me cold feeling, they are remodeling, and past threads reveal their service may be sketchy.
13. HARBOR CLUB - mostly view of a parking lot.

I've had an appt. with East Wind 2 weeks in a row and never made it out there - kinda far but I hear it is good. So far, I am very confused and need a break. I am jealous of you lucky girls that knew it was the right place from the moment you drove up to it. I haven't had that and I don't think I will b/c as my FH says 'I have champaigne taste and a beer budget'. I hear Land's End is georgous but $180 a head. Flower Field in the same boat. Oh my God, I am having panic attacks thinking about how bad I am going to be choosing a dress!!!!

I am willing at this point to give up the water if I have to . Any opinions????? How long did it take everyone to find their hall? Is this normal? I think I am being to picky.......

Re: Sad about reception sites

The caterers that have been there forever are not re-signing the lease. Supposedly the town thinks it is a huge money maker and raised their fees/rent whatever so the current caterers are not doing any bookings for 2004 b/c they don't want to do the new caterers work for them. Fine, you can still book for this year but I have concerns that they may not care as much about their parties (similar to how you felt the last 3 weeks of college after you already got accepted to your favorite grad school or got a job etc. - did you really care how well you did on those last 2 exams?) Anyway, if I wait till next year, their price per head will most assuredly go up. All this info I got from one of the managers this weekend (as well as many others on this site). It's really a shame to b/c it is a beautiful place.......................

How about the Bridgeview Yacht Club? They were booked for the date I wanted so I never made it out there, but they gave me a price well under $100 for a Saturday night on October. It looked nice in the pics.

Hmmm, interesting you mention them. I just called yesterday. Have a tasting next week. I was hesitant at first b/c I have gone to the night club many times in my day which made it hard to to keep an open mind about a wedding there. Also, I love the cathedral ceiling look and they would need to put me in the smaller room there. But it is worth a shot. Will let you know. Thanks!

Re: Sad about reception sites

Laura,
Here's an angle you may not have tried. Did you know that taking a date 6 months or less away is considered a last minute booking? I didn't know that when i booked The Milleridge last April, we got married in October. If you can be slightly flexible with your exact date & you willing to do things a little quicker you can get an outragous deal-maybe even @ The Vanderbilt. You see most of these places would rather fill the room with a small party than nothing @ all & the chances of a last minute 300 person wedding booking is slim. Talk to your Fi, call the places you like back & see what dates they can makes deals on-they do make deals. I got several places to basicly drop their drawers for some dates. The places that you like are all beautiful. Here are a few more ideas
The Swan Club
West Sayville Country club
Bellport Country Club
The Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport(run by Lessings)
Good Luck!!

Re: Sad about reception sites

you should really check out 15th and West, at the Nassau County Bar Association in Garden City. I guess you may have been there too, but I also lived in Nassau all my life and I had never even heard of it - they are not allowed to advertise. No water involved, but very elegant, quaint, and different. I think my guests were impressed. Also, the base price at the time (last October) was 80 pp for a Saturday night, so I got to have the extra's I wanted and still keep it affordable. Marie is the maitre d', she is very accomodaing and you get very personal service - it's a class act. good luck!

Re: Sad about reception sites

I have never been there, but hear great things about John Anthony's. Isnt that near the water??

Have you looked there?

We had the same problem. We looked at TOO Many places, until we finally found it. It turned out to be the last place we looked at.

You know my vote goes to the Sans Souci, and I may be biased on that, but they were very accomodating (we didn't think we'd make the 100 minimum and they were understanding). The food is excellent and depending on what month your planning for, the scenery for picture taking is very nice. You say you liked, but haven't decided??? I'm sure you'll find something. We looked for 2 months before deciding on the Sans Souci. It was teh second place we looked at and looked at about 15 others before going back and knowing it was the right place for us.

Re: Sad about reception sites

Did you check out Flowerfield? I KNOW they will TRY work with your budget, and if you're getting married in the winter, they knock even more off the price. I'm sure lands end will do the same, and they have the water view you want (I know FLowerfield and Land's End are affiliated with each other).
